New Orleans Best Local Restaurants: High Hat

4500 Freret St.; 504-754-1336

Situated at the top of the newly vitalized Freret Street corridor in Uptown New Orleans, High Hat Café is where New Orleans comfort food and the more typically Southern specialties of the Mississippi Delta meet. That means buttery BBQ shrimp and beef hot tamales share the table with chicken gumbo and pimento cheese. While fried catfish with hush puppies is an obvious specialty, High Hat’s fried chicken is a destination dish—and it goes quickly. The bar is one of the small details that made this restaurant an immediate classic. There’s nothing like a proper Old Fashioned to warm up your palate for a shrimp po’boy.
