Avery Ranch is one of Austin’s newest courses–it’s part of the Avery Ranch residential community, 20 minutes northwest of town, that was carved and blasted out of the rocky ranchlands along Brushy Creek. This historically significant area was once home to Indians and robbers, who were drawn to this beautiful setting thick with dense oaks, meandering creeks, and abundant wildlife.

Austinite Douglas Kinser approached the city in the late 1940s about improving the poor condition of the land occupied by the former Butler Brick Company. His wish was granted, and from the former clay mine he created a lush little 9-hole course that now graces a serene, landscaped setting just south of Town Lake.

The Yaupon Course came along 12 years after Live Oak, and was particularly challenging for Howard’s return to the area because of the rocky terrain. Due to the lack of soil, construction required 100,000 cubic yards of soil to be dredged from the lake bottom and spread over the entire course.

Lions upstaged the prestigious sand-greened Austin Country Club when it opened with Bermuda greens in 1923, and has been Austin’s most beloved municipal ever since. Although no one knows for sure who officially designed this short, 6,000-yard classic, it appears that many members of Austin’s golf scene were involved, including Harvey and Tom Penick, and perhaps even the legendary John Bredemus.

Unlike the flashier Fazio Course, Crenshaw’s work at Barton Creek typifies his traditionalist style, a tribute to his dedication as one of the game’s great historians. There’s more of a natural feel to playing on of his courses, and more pure golf enjoyment for the layman because they actually have a chance to hit the wide fairways and monstrous greens.
