About (AAA) Auto Club

On March 4, 1902, nine automobile clubs joined together to form the American Automobile Association. Since then, AAA has been a pioneer in the future of transportation in its fight for better roads. In 1915, AAA was the first to introduce a service for roadside service, which is one of the most valued components of an AAA membership because of its network of 13,000 facilities. Members can call or use the AAA Roadside or CAA Roadside app for android or iPhone to get help.

Since 1907 AAA has also been a resource to drivers with its bureau of touring, which provides data on roads, hotels, service facilities and motor vehicle laws. Most notably, AAA produced auto-oriented maps and road logs as well as guides and camping directories. They soon began inspection and recommendation of lodgings and restaurants. In 1927, they established a foreign travel department for handling tickets and shipping cars abroad.

Today, AAA is one of the largest travel organizations in the world. Prevention of car crashes became a concern for AAA clubs early on. In 1920, the School Safety Patrol program began, with children protecting classmates from traffic dangers. This was introduced to elementary and junior high schools. AAA also pioneered driver education classes in high schools. The AAA also published a Responsible Driving textbook (first published as Sportsmanlike Driving), which has become the most widely used book for new drivers. AAA also offers alcohol education programs, which thousands of communities use to address the problem of drunk driving.

The AAA currently offers daily gas prices through the AAA Fuel Gauge Report and provides estimates of gas cost for a trip with the AAA Fuel Cost Calculator.
