Beloved Farm Country Chinese Restaurant Will Open in Montavilla This Month

Treasured Polk County Chinese restaurant Happy Dragon will open on NE 82nd September 28. The restaurant, owned by the Feng family, was known as the hidden gem restaurant for exceptional Peking Duck service, a stalwart for students at Western Oregon University and Salemites alike. Now, the restaurant is moving to Montavilla, exploring more dim sum dishes the family felt unable to serve in its previous rural restaurant. Emily Feng, daughter of chef-owner Linan Feng, says the menu hasn’t changed much, though the restaurant will now start serving classic dishes like shumai, steamed spare ribs with black bean, congee, and rice noodle rolls with barbecue pork and shrimp.

Chef Feng started his career cooking in a Cantonese hotel out of culinary school, before moving to the United States. He spent time at Wong’s King and Ocean City before opening his own restaurant in Independence. His new Portland restaurant will retain many of the lovely details of the Southern rendition: House-made soy sauce, hoisin, and chili oil, perfect with his meticulously crafted Peking duck.
