The first Burger Chef opened in Indianapolis, IN in 1958. By the 1960s, there were locations in 38 states and, by 1969, there were 1,000 locations. In the 1970s, under the ownership of General Foods, the company went into decline. Many became Hardee’s outlets, some became Mr. Cook restaurants. The last operating Burger Chef closed in 1996.
