Healthy Paws Insurance Plan Comparison

Healthy Paws pet insurance has some big differences from ASPCA® Pet Health Insurance plans that you should consider carefully when you’re shopping for a pet insurance plan.

Enrollment Exam Requirements

The Healthy Paws insurance policy requires that all pets less than six years old undergo a complete clinical examination either 12 months before or 15 days after your policy effective date. The same goes for pets who are six years old or more, but the examination must be done 30 days before or 15 days after the effective date.

You’ll need to provide Healthy Paws with documentation of this exam plus a copy of your pet’s full medical history when you file your first claim. If they don’t get this information, payment of your claim could be affected. With ASPCA® Pet Health Insurance plans, you do not have to show proof of a physical exam or submit your pet’s previous medical history to enroll.

Preventive Care

ASPCA® Pet Health Insurance plans allow you to add preventive care coverage to your plan at a low additional cost. It can help you manage the costs of wellness services, such as an annual exam, vaccines, and heartworm preventatives. Healthy Paws does not offer this coverage. Even if you don’t intend to sign up for this coverage when you first enroll, you may decide you’d like to add it in the future.

Hereditary and Congenital Conditions

Both Healthy Paws and ASPCA® Pet Health Insurance plans have coverage for hereditary and congenital conditions with one significant difference. Healthy Paws does not cover hip dysplasia for pets who are over six years old when they are enrolled. ASPCA® Pet Health Insurance plans cover hip dysplasia no matter how old your pet is when they are enrolled.

Behavioral Conditions

Healthy Paws does not have coverage for behavioral conditions. These conditions, which can include symptoms such as destructive chewing, excessive barking, and other obsessive behaviors, can be harmful to your pet and disruptive to the whole household. That’s why ASPCA® Pet Health Insurance plans cover the diagnosis and treatment of behavioral conditions.

Prescription Food and Supplements

Prescription food and supplements can be helpful to dogs with certain health conditions. With ASPCA® Pet Health Insurance coverage, you can get reimbursed for them when used to treat a covered condition (not for general maintenance or weight management). Healthy Paws does not offer this type of coverage.

Multiple Pet Discount

If you currently have more than one pet or think you may add a new pet to your family in the future, you’ll be happy to know that the ASPCA® Pet Health Insurance program has a 10% multiple pet discount for each pet after your most expensive pet. Healthy Paws does not have any discounts for insuring multiple pets.
