Maryland State Requirements for CNAs

In Maryland, CNAs are referred to as Geriatric Nursing Assistants or GNAs. Candidates must undergo classes at a Board of Nursing-approved program. Classes consists of 100 hours, which must include clinical experience at a Maryland Licensed Nursing Home. Additionally, those that are actively studying to become a student nurse, are student nurses but are not currently actively studying, are a graduate nurse of another accredited program, or a graduate nurse from a foreign country, may also apply to become a GNA provided they follow specific documentation requirements. Once the exam is successfully completed, the candidate’s name will be sent from Pearson Vue to the Maryland Board of Nursing for placement on the Maryland Geriatric Nursing Assistant Registry.
