In the shadow of Grandfather Mountain, Mountain Glen is an affordable, “player-friendly” full 18-hole course in Newland with a par of 72, designed by George Cobb, the golf course architect responsible for The Par 3 Course in Augusta National Golf Club. The front nine is described as more of a links-style course, relatively flat and open with small greens, while the back nine presents a bit more of a challenge with the 11th hole uphill dog-leg left, rated as one of the best par 4’s in Western North Carolina, circling back to the clubhouse. Aside from the course, Mountain Glen’s facilities include a full service golf shop and grill, practice putting and chipping greens and a driving range.

Home to Appalachian State University Golf teams, Boone Golf Club is rated as one of the top public courses in the area, given 4.5 stars by Golf Digest. The Ellis Maples designed 18-hole course is 6,680 yards long with a par of 71. The public club’s facilities include a pro shop, Fairway Cafe, a practice range, green and chipping area. With newly added senior tees, the course is a ‘must-play’ for all ages and experiences.

Mountain Aire Golf Club

West Jefferson’s Mountain Aire Golf Club brought the first public golf to the High Country in 1952 and has since evolved into a modern 18-hole course known for its reasonable rates and local, friendly atmosphere. A modest 6,406 yards, the 72 par course is complemented by the golf club’s golf shop and renowned snack shop, serving “super dogs” and “special chili.”

Sugar Mountain Golf Course

Not your average golf course, Sugar Mountain Golf Course is a 64 par municipal course of 4,560 yards designed by Frank Duane and Arnold Palmer. A feature of the resort hub that is the Village of Sugar Mountain, the Sugar Mountain course is becoming a destination in itself for the value-seeking public golfer.

Willow Creek Golf Course

Willow Creek is a 9-hole Par 3 course designed by Tom Jackson just off of NC 105. What some are calling the finest Par 3 layout this side of Augusta National, Willow Creek is affectionately known as “The Little Green Monster” for it’s surprising shotmaking demands. Willow Creek runs on a unique first come-first served basis, with no tee times.
