Why The Lost Kitchen in Freedom, ME is One of a Kind

The Chef

Erin French learned the fundamentals and the joy of cooking while working at her father’s diner. Now at the helm of The Lost Kitchen, she takes the time to do things the right way, not the easy way. (Like tapping 50 of her own maple trees to make maple walnut ice cream). Her kitchen is run by a team of female farmers, many of whom supply the restaurant’s meat and produce. It’s this dedication to sustainability and support of the local community that has garnered The Lost Kitchen so many accolades in just a few years – including the cover of Maine Magazine.

The Atmosphere

Located about an hour and a half from our inn, The Lost Kitchen in Freedom, ME is worth the drive. A two-lane country road leads diners past rolling farms to the tiny town of Freedom. Take a quick left on Main Street, cross a narrow bridge, and you’ll arrive at the Mill at Freedom Farms – The Lost Kitchen’s beautifully renovated home.

The interior consists of a dining room and open kitchen, which was designed to make guests feel instantly at home. Wildflowers dot the tables and water is served in mason jars. Upstairs is a school for local kids; downstairs, a candlelit wine store. Since there are no liquor licenses in Freedom, you can buy wine at the store to drink with dinner or bring your own.

The Food

Recognized by the James Beard Foundation for her innovative, organic cuisine, Chef Erin works magic with local ingredients. Each prix-fixe tasting includes eight to ten courses, and none of the food is overly seasoned or salted. Instead, diners can expect elegant, flavorful meals driven by the season, availability, and weather.

In the summer, French loves to combine simple grilled meat or seafood with salads and vegetables. She takes advantage of hearty root vegetables and stews in the wintertime, warming her guests from the inside out. Signature dishes like buttery mussels, spinach salad, fried squash blossoms, and duck confit promise a true taste of Maine no matter what time of year you visit.
