Hit the links at these 12 public golf courses in Lancaster County
Love the game or hate it, with nice weather comes the return of golf season.
Lancaster County has put itself on the map in the golfing world, hosting the 2015 U.S. Women’s Open at Lancaster Country Club and being home to one of the best golfers in the world, Jim Furyk.
Whether you’re a scratch golfer or a hacker, here are 12 public courses to play 18 in Lancaster County.
1. Crossgates Golf Club
The Millersville course plays from 4,700 to 6,100 yards. The 18th hole is a par-5 with a pond off to its side plays from 447 to 561 yards.
The course in Stevens plays from 5,600 to 6,600 yards. Head golf pro Chip Kappesser said the signature hole is 8. The par-3 hole plays from 145 to 200 yards and is completely over water.
“It’s a links, rolling hills type of course,” Kappesser said. “It’s more high grass, with not too many trees. There are three huge ponds.”
The Mount Joy course plays from 4,773 to 6,350 yards. The 9th hole features a tight fairway and water to the left, trees and rocks to the right, and a peninsula green. It is elevated with a rock wall.

The Elizabethtown course plays from 4,800 to 6,600 yards. The 9th hole is a par 5 that plays from 435 to 615 yards. There are wetlands on the left and trees on the right.
The Manheim course plays from 4,096 to 4,794 yards. Hole 7 is a par-3 hole plays from 150 to 228 yards. You’ll have to hit the ball over water, and the green has a lot of slope.
The Landisville course plays from 5,300 to 6,150 yards. Hole 17 is a par 4 hole with a dogleg (left) and a ditch that runs across the fairway at the dogleg.
Hawk Valley plans to open Monday, April 9 as a modified 9-hole course. Half the course was taken over by a housing project. Superintendent Paul Zimmerman said the course will have two sets of tee boxes and golfers will be able to play those nine holes twice. The different tee boxes will give the course a different length both times you play, Zimmerman said.
The Lancaster course plays from 5,411 to 6,849 yards.

The par-5 2nd hole is 540 yards at its longest and has a dogleg right that goes over water.
The course in Manheim Township plays from 5,019 to 6,205 yards. Ken Ord, director of golf, said the signature hole is 3. The par-3 hole plays from 164 to 211 yards. Ord said water runs down the left side of the hole, and there is a front bunker.

“It’s a tree-lined course built in 1929,” Ord said.
The Peach Bottom course plays from 4,921 to 6,766 yards. Peter Trimble, golf manager, said hole 12 is the signature hole. It is a par 3 that plays from 105 to 198 yards over water on the left side with trees to the right.

“The course as a whole is somewhat open with not too many trees,” Trimble said.
The Quarryville course plays from 5,000 to 6,400 yards. Scott Sklar, PGA head golf professional, said hole 18 is the signature hole. It is a par 5 that plays from 412 to 550 yards. It goes up a hill and across a creek, and it has a two-tier green.

“The course is fairly tree-lined, and it is very playable,” Sklar said.
The Manheim course plays a total of 4,569 yards. Only two holes — 9 and 16 — have ladies tees. Andrew Longenecker, manager, said hole 9 is the signature hole. It is a par 4, 393-yard hole with a dogleg, a pond and two sand traps.
“(The course) is forgiving,” Longenecker said. “Most find paring the course difficult because of the longer par 3. There are more par 4s than par 3s.”
