Bethpage Black is, by far, at the top of the list… the first public golf course in the USA to ever host a US OPEN championship, and in fact, hosted the OPEN twice in 2002 and 2009. It was designed by Tillinghast and built in 1936. “The Black” is not for the novice player, but there are four other courses at Bethpage to accommodate every level of play..

Suffolk County Public Golf Courses

Suffolk County, Long Island is the eastern most part of the island and features some of the most challenging courses which are open to the public. Certainly Long Island National and Tallgrass are among the favorites which are links style courses that can make you feel like you are in Scotland or Ireland with the combination of tall fescue grass, wind, and ‘spicy’ greens.

Of course one of the newest and most beautiful Suffolk County venues is ‘Cherry Creek’. Cherry Creek appeals to so many golfers because it features two completely different 18 hole tracks, one called “Woods”, with challenging dog legs, water holes, and tree lined fairways, and the “Links”, which has beautiful elevated tees and links layout, leading up to a dramatic and challenging 644 yard Par 6 finishing hole ! Cherry Creek also enjoys close proximity to the Long Island Vineyard region (most vineyards offer daily wine tasting) and the Tanger Outlets, a mecca for designer outlets.
