MAPFRE is a global insurance company operating in more than 100 countries. In the United States, MAPFRE sells coverage in 19 states, although not all products are available in all states. The company offers robust auto and home insurance policies and could be a good choice for customers living in its service areas. MAPFRE is especially notable for its claims tools that could help speed up the process of repairing auto or home damage. If you are in the market for car insurance or homeowners insurance, keep reading our MAPFRE Insurance review to get a sense of the company’s offerings.

MAPFRE car insurance

Drivers looking for the best car insurance for a personalized policy may want to consider MAPFRE. Coverage is available in 14 states, but online quoting is only available in eight states and Puerto Rico. If you prefer to do business in person, MAPFRE does offer an agency locator tool, although agents are not as widespread as they are with other companies.

The MAPFRE car insurance policy is fairly robust, offering a handful of add-ons including accident forgiveness and disappearing deductibles. The “AutoMaster” endorsement is also available in some states, and it combines several coverage options into one easy-to-add coverage.

MAPFRE car insurance discounts

Drivers who want to save money on their car insurance premium might benefit from MAPFRE’s many auto insurance discounts, including:

  • Paid-in-full: If you can afford to pay your premium in full rather than in installments, you could save money.
  • Good student: If you insure a young driver who is a full-time student (or if you are one yourself), you could qualify for this discount if your GPA meets certain criteria.
  • Clean-in-Three: This discount may be applied if a driver has been licensed for three years and there have been no at-fault accidents or traffic violations during the three years of the policy effective date.

MAPFRE also offers two safe driving programs, InControl Crash Prevention Training and TeenSmart Training, which could help teach you or your teen driver safer habits and lower your premium at the same time.

MAPFRE car services

MAPFRE seems to know that car insurance claims can be stressful and seeks to make the process a bit smoother. If your vehicle’s damages qualify, you could take advantage of the company’s ePICS option. As long as your vehicle (motorcycles and heavy equipment don’t qualify) is driveable and listed on your auto insurance policy, you can submit photos of your damage to epics@mapfreusa.com, along with your contact information and claim number, and receive a digital appraisal. If the damage is deemed too extensive for a digital appraisal, you’ll be guided on how to proceed.

Another helpful claims service is the CAR EZ program, which helps drivers schedule a prioritized repair with an auto body shop and coordinate a rental car pickup after a covered accident. MAPFRE offers guaranteed service coverage for the lifetime of the vehicle and the service technicians will even wash the car before it is returned to the owner.

MAPFRE home insurance

The best homeowners insurance companies offer a variety of options for homeowners to personalize their policy, and MAPFRE is no different. The company could be a good option if you are seeking a robust home insurance policy with numerous add-on options. Online quotes are available in nine states, although coverage may be available more broadly. MAPFRE earned a 4.0 out of 5.0 on our Bankrate Score scale for its combination of affordable rates, extensive coverage choices and financial strength. However, MAPFRE isn’t rated by J.D. Power for customer or claims satisfaction and its digital offerings aren’t as robust as other carriers.

Depending on where you live, you may want to consider adding on MAPFRE’s water backup coverage, which provides coverage for the damage caused by water and sewer line backups. Choosing replacement cost for your personal property coverage may also be a smart financial move, so you’ll get the full replacement value if your belongings are destroyed in a covered loss. MAPFRE also offers increased limits coverage for items like jewelry, special personal property coverage to broaden the insurance perils for your belongings, credit card coverage and service line coverage. MAPFRE also offers specific insurance programs for antique homes and high-value homes.

MAPFRE home insurance cost

In general, MAPFRE home insurance is an affordable option for fairly robust coverage. The national average cost of home insurance is $1,383 per year for $250,000 in dwelling coverage, while MAPFRE’s average rate for the same amount of coverage is $951 per year. This trend is seen across a range of different dwelling coverage amounts. For $750,000 in dwelling coverage, MAPFRE’s average premium is nearly half of the national average.

MAPFRE home insurance discounts

One of the ways to save on homeowners insurance is through discounts. MAPFRE does not list specific home insurance discounts on its website, but does mention on its auto insurance page that a multi-policy discount is available if you bundle your auto and home insurance. MAPFRE may offer additional home insurance discounts; talking to a company representative or visiting a local agency may help you learn what savings you qualify for.

MAPFRE home services

Just like with auto insurance, MAPFRE offers an ePICS option for home insurance claims as well. As long as your damage qualifies, you may be able to get a digital estimate for repair costs, rather than having to schedule an in-person damage assessment. This could help to speed up the claim process.

MAPFRE also offers a Select Home Restoration Program. This program helps homeowners get expedited repairs with guaranteed coverage. Homeowners can get emergency home repairs within two hours and same-day contact for scheduling major structural repairs. Partners in the Select Home Restoration Program can address issues like smoke/fire damage, water damage, mold and asbestos removal, storm clean up and more.

Other MAPFRE perks worth considering

In addition to auto and home insurance, MAPFRE also offers the following types of coverage:

  • Business
  • Umbrella
  • Watercraft/boat/yacht
  • Motorcycle
  • Recreational vehicle

MAPFRE corporate sustainability

MAPFRE has a strong social responsibility policy that leans heavily on the 2030 Agenda provided by the United Nations. The company’s Sustainability Plan 2022–2024 is broken into four parts: social, business, environmental and governance. Each section has its own set of goals that MAPFRE is committed to accomplishing by 2024. For example, the company is working toward having just a 1% pay gap between genders by 2024 and being 100% carbon neutral by 2030 (with operations in “main” countries being carbon neutral by 2024).

Not sure if MAPFRE is right for you?

If you’re shopping for a new home or car insurance company, MAPFRE could be a good option. However, it isn’t available nationwide. On top of that, your specific needs might mean that MAPFRE isn’t quite the right fit. Here are some alternatives you may want to consider:

  • Geico: If you are looking for an insurance company that is available nationwide, Geico might be a good choice. The carrier also has an impressive array of discounts and digital tools. Keep in mind, though, that its options for car insurance add-ons are limited and its home insurance is underwritten by third parties.
  • Auto-Owners: If you’re drawn to MAPFRE’s extensive home insurance coverage options, you may also want to get a quote from Auto-Owners. Coverage is available in 26 states and Washington, D.C., and the company has a long list of home insurance endorsements to help you build a customized policy.
  • State Farm: State Farm is known for its extensive network of local agents, so if you like to handle your insurance in person, it could be a good option. The company is licensed to write in all 50 states and Washington, D.C., but isn’t currently writing new business in Massachusetts or Rhode Island.

Methodology

Bankrate utilizes Quadrant Information Services to analyze 2022 current rates for all ZIP codes and carriers in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quoted rates are based on 40-year-old male and female homeowners with a clean claim history, good credit and the following coverage limits:

  • Coverage A, Dwelling: $150,000, $250,000, $350,000, $450,000, $750,000
  • Coverage B, Other Structures: $15,000, $25,000, $35,000, $45,000, $75,000

  • Coverage D, Loss of Use: $30,000, $50,000, $70,000, $90,000, $150,000
  • Coverage E, Liability: $300,000, $300,000, $300,000, $300,000, $500,000
  • Coverage F, Medical Payments: $1,000

The homeowners also have a $1,000 deductible and a separate wind and hail deductible (if required).

These are sample rates and should be used for comparative purposes only. Your quotes will differ.

Bankrate Scores

Bankrate Scores are calculated on a five-point scale and primarily reflect a weighted rank of industry-standard ratings for financial strength and customer experience in addition to analysis of quoted annual premiums from Quadrant Information Services, spanning all 50 states and Washington, D.C. We know it is important for drivers and homeowners to be confident their financial protection covers the likeliest risks, is priced competitively and is provided by a financially-sound company with a history of positive customer support.

To determine how well the best car and home insurance companies satisfy these priorities, third-party agency ratings from J.D. Power, AM Best, S&P, NAIC, and Moody’s had the most impact on the companies’ Bankrate Scores. As price is a common consideration for drivers and homeowners, we analyzed quoted premiums based on 40-year-old male and female drivers with a 2019 Toyota Camry, as well as 40-year-old male and female homeowners with $250,000 in dwelling coverage. This profile, assessed across nearly 35,000 ZIP codes in the U.S., provided a basis on which drivers and homeowners may compare each provider.

While coverage options, insurer availability, affordability and customer experience are often the top priorities, Bankrate also analyzed each insurer’s online and mobile resources for policy management and claims handling. Insurance is rapidly evolving to keep pace with our digital world, so these aspects also carried weight in determining Bankrate Scores.
