Training Courses

The Cycle Rider Safety Training Program offers courses for riders of all skill and experience levels. All courses are free to any Illinois resident 16 or older who holds a valid automobile or motorcycle driver’s license or permit. The CRSTP is the only program authorized by the Illinois Secretary of State to offer a license waiver. Residents younger than 18 must have written consent from a legal guardian.

What Courses We Offer:

Basic Rider Course

This 20-hour course includes classroom and riding instruction and improves street-riding skills and strategies. Scooter riders are welcome to participate in the courses to receive their “L” or “M” license. License waivers are issued upon successful completion of this course for students 18 or older.

Training motorcycle and DOT-approved helmet provided.

Basic Rider Course 2

This program is for riders who have the basic skills in straight-line riding, shifting, stopping and clutch control, but want to improve their skills. This one-day course includes classroom and riding instruction. License waivers are issued upon successful completion of this course for students 18 or older.

Training motorcycle and DOT-approved helmet provided.

3 Wheel Basic Rider Course

This 20-hour course includes classroom and riding instruction and improves street-riding skills and strategies for three-wheel riders. License waivers are issued upon successful completion of this course for students 18 or older.

Training motorcycle and DOT-approved helmet provided. 

Advanced Rider Course

The 8.5-hour training is for experienced riders and complements the skills learned in the previous courses. Special emphasis is given to self-assessment, risk management, rider behavior, riding strategies and overall skill development, particularly in braking, cornering and swerving.

Rider must provide a street-legal motorcycle in good mechanical repair, DOT-approved helmet, current motorcycle registration or written approval from the owner of the motorcycle, proof of insurance, and must have a valid motorcycle license.
