Review of Benno’s Cajun Seafood Restaurant in Galveston, TX

My husband and I both enjoy cooking, visiting local restaurants, and exploring food from all over the world. We live in Houston.

Local Favorite Seafood Place

My husband and I got a tip about a favorite place residents from Galveston, Texas, enjoy dining a few years ago from a lady who works at the Moody Mansion. In the Moody Mansion gift shop, they displayed and sold some of my linocut art for several years. We recently picked up some remaining art at the gift shop and happily headed back to Benno’s restaurant for another tasty seafood and Cajun-flavored meal.

Casual Atmosphere

Though their dine-in or take-out print menu is titled “Benno’s Dining on the Beach,” it is actually across the road from the beach. As you can see from my photos below, beach scenes are easily within view.

This casual restaurant is open all day from the opening hour of 11:00 a.m. until they close at 9:00 p.m. (Sunday through Thursday), 10:00 p.m. (Fridays), and 11:00 p.m. (Saturdays). The address is 1212 Seawall Boulevard, Galveston, Texas, 77550.

One orders food at a counter and then chooses where to sit, either inside or outside. The food, when ready, is delivered by a friendly waitstaff. My husband and I have never had much of a wait since we have always thus far avoided typically busy hours.

Benno’s also has a catering business. The telephone number is the following: 409-762-4621. According to their Facebook page, during the height of Covid, they kept all of their employees paid. They also often donated food at their catering location to anyone in Galveston who found themselves out of work.

Benno and Charles Criner

On Benno’s Facebook page is an article from the Galveston newspaper, The Daily News, regarding the life and death of Benno John Deltz, who lived to the age of 80. Mr. Deltz was a third-generation Galvestonian who learned the business of cooking and running a restaurant after working for 20 years at another long-time successful restaurant on the island.

While my husband and I never met him, we certainly do know Charles Criner, who has his art prominently featured on the walls of Benno’s. It was fun to see Charles’ lithographic art, with which we are very familiar.

We found out that Charles and Benno Deltz had become acquainted and liked one another. Charles Criner offered to furnish the art to decorate the restaurant, and in return, he began eating there at no charge. I think it was a bargain for both of these talented and successful men!

The Galveston Chamber of Commerce gave this restaurant a “Small Business of the Year” award in 2017.

Food Choices

The images below show some of the foods we have enjoyed on several occasions. Much of what they serve comes right out of the Gulf of Mexico across the street. When cooks start with the freshest ingredients, it makes the final dish even more delicious.

Shrimp, crab, oysters, catfish, crawfish, and more are on the menu and prepared in several different ways. Tasty coleslaw, french fries, and hushpuppies accompany many of their dishes. Click on the official link at the bottom of this page to view their full menu.

Enjoying the Gulf breezes while watching the antics of seabirds navigating the air currents, plus people playing on the beaches makes for a delightful backdrop. All of that, matched with enticing foods coming out of the kitchen, this is a restaurant we will enjoy returning to again and again.

Dog-Friendly Restaurant

While we have never seen dogs on the patio at Benno’s, they are allowed outside.

We spotted a friendly-looking golden retriever in a vehicle in the parking lot, waiting for his people to return from the restaurant. It was a pleasant day for him to be smelling the salt breezes from the rolled-down window.
