Sandra Bullock’s popular downtown Austin bistro closing its doors

It’s time to bid adieu to Bess Bistro: The Sandra Bullock-owned restaurant will close later this month.

Bess Bistro’s final day on West Sixth Street will be Sunday, September 20, but the space won’t stay empty for long. “A new concept will soon open in Bess’ location we are certain will provide the community with a unique and exciting dining experience,” the restaurant revealed on Facebook. Austin360 reports that the new owners of the space will be opening a tapas lounge.

The quaint bistro opened in 2006 in a historic building on West Sixth, which provided a sophisticated speakeasy vibe throughout its nine-year reign. The high-end cuisine was originally French in focus, but gradually moved towards a more seasonal, New American feel under Executive Chef Roman Murphy.

Bess Bistro’s sister eatery, Walton’s Fancy & Staple, will remain open.

“We have enjoyed serving the Austin community and have made many friends we hope to continue to see at Walton’s Fancy and Staple just across Sixth Street,” the restaurant wrote on Facebook. “We extend our thanks to all our many friends. Thank you for your support and we’ll see you at Walton’s!”
