Texas | Top 100 Golf Courses

Texas, the Lone Star State, is the biggest of the 48 contiguous United States and the second most populous with some 26 million residents. Houston, the biggest city in Texas, was immortalised by the TV film “Houston, we have a problem”, despite the film title’s misquote, it was following the Apollo 14 mission when Alan Shepard became the first man to hit a golf ball on the Moon. Houston is still the earthly home for the world famous NASA Mission Control Center.

Founded in 1906, the Texas Golf Association now takes care of the interests of more than 400 golf clubs in the Lone Star State. Although the Texan landscape and environment is not perfect for golf, some old fashioned layouts do exist in the Dallas region, the most notable of which is probably AW Tillinghast’s Brook Hollow, but old fashioned Texan courses are largely eclipsed by modern layouts.

Jockeying for position at the head of the Texas table were Dallas National and Whispering Pines, both of which opened their tees for play in the new millennium but their bid to top the state rankings came rather unstuck in 2016 when the new Tiger Woods and Beau Welling design at Bluejack National was unveiled.
