The 15 Best Japanese Restaurants in Honolulu

Brian: Went for a safe chicken katsu plate and enjoyed it. Would try again.

sohail: Very unassuming spot with an excellent selection of meats/chicken/seafood. Chill, laidback vibe and the food was great! I had the ahi katsu. Popular dishes run out by early afternoon.

Kim Matsu: The katsu is good, of course. But they have foie gras nigiri! It’s winner!!!

Wayne Karo: Ask for a dirty greygoose martini and say I recommended it.

Jonathan Tashima: Only 25 servings if Kurobuta pork katsu are available each day. If they still have it, jump all over it. You will not be sorry, nor will you ever have better tonkatsu!

Johnny Wang: (5/5) Spacious restaurant serving up tonkatsu served multiple ways, but done perfectly regardless: super crispy, juicy, and somehow, not particularly greasy either. Be prepared for the LONG waits.

Kevin Tak: Three kinds of Japanese pickles are served at first. You can choose one of three kind of rices. Try Loin cutlets and fillet cutlets. Will come back again very soon.

Christina: Every component of a meal here is mindfully, carefully prepared and pieced together to make the whole experience so satisfying. You can’t go wrong with a katsu set – get the mix to taste them all.

Philip Luu: best spam musubis! once you try these, you’ll never purchase them from ABC stores again! $1.88 for an original Spam Musubi

Edison Tran: Stock up on these Musubis before a hike to Diamond Head!

JH H-D: Such great musubi (my favorite is the spicy roe) and the spam ones are classic Hawaii!!

Maurice Ross: The sushi and sashimi are pristine. The sake flight is genius. The appetizers are spectacular.

Tianna Johnson: Amazing seafood quality. Best real crab California rolls, the scallops and butterfish are to die for! Best traditional sushi place on the island. Owner, waitstaff and chefs are fantastic too.

Andy Davidson: Just amazing sushi, my highlights were the scallops and butterfish dishes. For sashimi, the yellowfin tuna and salmon were amazing. Extremely friendly service. Can’t wait to go back.

Scott K: Food was great. The o-toro was even better. It’s small but turns tables fast

Lynette Eugenio: Cozy bar with limited seating, so make a reservation ahead. Try the hamachi carpaccio, bara chirashi, seafood shooter – everything is extremely fresh.

Jon B.: Get the ahi platter with a side of uni. Fish is as fresh as one can get!

Jesse Luna: Our favorites were the Emperor Roll, Misoyaki Butterfish, and Volcano Roll but everything we tried was delicious!

Electric Bamboo: If you enjoyed eating Oxtail Soup at Kam Bowl in Kalihi (now gone), come here if you want to recapture that taste; The operators of that diner operate Asahi Grill now.

Melissa Chang: If you’ve checked in on foursquare & no one has greeted you yet, you might as well leave! Service is kind of non-existent.

Rob Green: If you are lucky and there early GET the Katsuo Tataki! You will not be disappointed, it is amazing!

Quinton Ma: Most affordable omakase I’ve ever had. Amazing/creative food served in beautiful ceramic dishes. When you make a reservation try to request a seat at the counter, so you can watch all the prep work.

Electric Bamboo: No real menu here – They serve a kaiseki (a Japanese set of courses) that changes each month. A sublime dining experience that I highly recommend.

Coralee Dixon: Authentic & fun japanese cuisine – come with an open mind and be ready for delicious surprises! Be sure to sit at the counter to watch the food being prepared.

Angel A.Angel A: Happy hour after 9pm Mon-Fri. So good!! Try the paper hot pot for something different.

Electric B.Electric Bamboo: If you have a friend named Ricky, you can make jokes about skin discomfort with him over here. Works with women named Rikki too.

Agatha V.Agatha Viernes: It’s known for their nabe but a friend told us to come for their sukiyaki and it was sooooo good! Did not disappoint! The meatballs are so tasty and the prime beef dipped in the egg wash is yummy too.
