The Undergraduate Programs | Electrical and Computer Engineering

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering offers undergraduate programs leading to the BS in electrical engineering, engineering physics, and computer engineering, and the BA in electrical engineering and society. Each of these programs can be tailored to provide preparation for graduate study or employment in a wide range of fields. The Electrical Engineering (B.S.) program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, www.abet.org.

P/NP FAQs:

Can I take a lower division Math course such as MATH 20C or a lower division course such as PHYS 2B P/NP?

Major requirements are not limited to ECE courses. MATH 18,20ABCDE and PHYS 2ABCD, 2DL are ECE degree requirements and can be taken P/NP in SP20, FA20, WI21 and SP21. P grades in these courses if taken during these quarters will satisfy ECE degree or major requirements.

Can I take a CSE course P/NP?

If you are a CE major, CE major requirements are not limited to ECE or CSE courses. Each major requires a combination of lower division and upper division requirements in CSE, ECE, MATH, PHYS, etc. CSE 8A,B, 11, 12,15L,20,21,20, 100,101,110,120,140,140L, 141, and 141L are CE major requirements. P grades in these courses if taken during SP20, FA20, WI21 and SP21 will satisfy CE major requirements.

I am taking an upper division CSE, MATH, PHYS, COGS course. Can I take it P/NP?

Major requirements are not limited to ECE courses. If an acceptable upper division CSE, MATH, PHYS or COGS course is satisfying a Professional or Technical or CSE/ECE Elective or CSE Technical Elective, it can be taken P/NP in SP20, FA20, WI21 and SP21. P grades in these courses if taken during SP20, FA20, WI21 and SP21 will satisfy ECE degree or major requirements.

I’m a BS/MS student. Can I take courses that I plan to transfer to the MS Program P/NP?

Courses that will apply towards the MS degree can be taken P/NP in SP20, FA20, WI21 and SP21. Students must earn a “P” grade or B- or higher, if the letter grade option is chosen, to transfer the units.

Should I choose the P/NP option?

We understand that students are experiencing challenges under the current circumstances and learning remotely. However, students should consider possible consequences when choosing the P/NP option for their major courses. Advisors cannot determine how P/NP grades will affect future job or internship applications and graduate school admissions. P/NP grades do not provide enough information for hiring managers or admissions committees to evaluate a student’s academic performance. Some who review applications may think that a P grade equates to a C or C-.
