FALL 2022 Updates

All ECE courses in FA22 are expected to be offered in-person.

ECE 5

All seats are held for incoming FA22 EE Freshmen/Transfer students.  Current students must waitlist during 2nd pass. A limited number of seats will be released to EC27 majors after 2nd pass. Make sure to check your @ucsd.edu  email account for notifications from the ECE Department about enrollment in this course after 2nd pass. 

Incoming ECE majors must waitlist during 2nd pass and will be notified when they have been cleared to add after 2nd pass.  Non Majors: All remaining seats will be released after new student enrollment in early September.  

ECE 15

ECE 25

ECE 35

All seats are held for incoming FA22 (EC26, EC27, EC28, EC37, CS25, BE29) Transfer students. Current students must waitlist during 2nd pass. A limited number of seats will be released to EC26, EC27, EC28, EC37, CS25, BE29  majors who are waitlisted after 2nd pass. Make sure to check your @ucsd.edu  email account for notifications from the ECE Department about enrollment in this course after 2nd pass.

ECE 143

Students who have completed the prerequisites will still need clearance to add.  Please submit your request through the Enrollment Authorization System (EASy). 

ECE 148

Introduction to Autonomous Vehicles (Silberman). Prerequisites: ECE15 or ECE 25 or MAE 3 or consent of the instructor. To enroll, The application closed on Friday, May 27th. Students will be notified on Wednesday, June 1st through the EASy preauthorization system if they have been approved to add. 

Please note, if any student drops the course, up until the first week of class, we will notify the next student on the waitlist that they have been cleared to add, so there is still a chance to be added to this course.  Make sure to continually check your @ucsd email address for possible updates about your registration status in this course. 

Graduate Level Courses
Undergrads must submit an EASy request to enroll. EASy requests will be approved after ECE Graduate student enrollment is finalized. Please note that undergrads cannot be added to a graduate level course waitlist. Students may not be cleared to add until first day of the quarter, with Professor approval and space availability in the course.

***Undergraduate students who do not have prerequisites in non-core ECE courses and want to enroll in a specific course, will need faculty approval through the online course pre-authorization system. 

Students who have received faculty approval to enroll in a non-core ECE course without meeting the prerequisite will be cleared to enroll after 2nd pass.  Students who have completed the prerequisites will have priority to enroll first.

 

  SUMMER 2022 Updates

All ECE courses in SU22 are expected to be offered in-person; with the exception of ECE 45 (S122), ECE 109, and ECE 180 (All Sessions in S122 and S222).

ECE 148

Introduction to Autonomous Vehicles (Silberman). Prerequisites: ECE15 or ECE 25 or MAE 3 or consent of the instructor. The application has closed and admitted students have been notified. 

Please note that there are only 12 spots for ECE students and typically a large waitlist.  If any student drops the course, up until the first week of class, we will notify the next student on the waitlist that they have been cleared to add.  Make sure to continually check your @ucsd email address for possible updates about your registration status in this course.

ECE 180 (S122)

Power Distribution Systems (Abi-Samra). Hands-on Class. This course presents the most important aspects of power distribution engineering. It dives into distribution loads characterization, distribution reliability, voltage control/ regulation on distribution systems, amongst other essential topic in distribution system engineering. It thoroughly covers distribution system faults and protection. This course will have several very practical exercises that will cement the most salient points and concepts. Prerequisites: none. To enroll, please submit your request through the Enrollment Authorization System  (EASy).

ECE 180 (S122)

Smart Power Systems (Abi-Samra). This course covers the emerging changes to the conventional grid systems and many aspects of the smart grid. It dives into the practical facets of the technologies, design, policies, and implementation. Topics include smart grid applications and smart sensing; advanced metering infrastructure and energy management; microgrids and distributed energy resources. It also presents actual case studies and lessons learned from them.  Prerequisites: none. To enroll, please submit your request through the Enrollment Authorization System  (EASy).

***Please note this course was offered in Summer Session 2, 2018 & 2019, and Summer Session 1 2020 & 2021.  Students who completed the course will not receive credit if taken again.

ECE 180 (S222)

Power Transmission Planning (Abi-Samra). This course will cover several factors of essential transmission system planning topics including components and systems. This is hand-on course that will utilize the industry-standard PowerWorld program. Each student will have his/her own copy of an education version of this very powerful program, in addition will have to access to the 250,000- bus version that UCSD licensed for. Prerequisites: none. To enroll, please submit your request through the Enrollment Authorization System  (EASy).

ECE 180 (S222)

Sustainable Renewable Energy Resources (Abi-Samra). This course will dive into sustainable energy resources such as: solar, wind power and hydro. The class will explore the opportunities and challenges of integrating sustainable renewable energy sources into the conventional power grids. It will present lessons learned from such applications from real life situations. Prerequisites: none. To enroll, please submit your request through the Enrollment Authorization System  (EASy).

Students are able to take ECE 65 and 100 concurrently. They must be enrolled in ECE 65 before advisors can clear them. Please submit an EASy request to enroll.
ECE 100/102
Students are able to take ECE 100 and 102 concurrently. They must be enrolled in ECE 100 before advisors can clear them. Please submit an EASy request to enroll.
ECE 102
Effective Fall 2014, ECE 102 has a new prerequisite: ECE 100.
ECE 103
Effective Winter 2015, ECE 65 is another prerequisite.
ECE 108
Effective Fall 2014, only EE, EP, EE & Society majors up to Fall 2013 will have this requirement in which students will need to replace ECE 108 with another Technical Elective. EE, EP, EE & Society majors who entered Fall 2014 and after do not need to worry about ECE 108.  CE majors are required to replace the course with a CSE/ECE Elective.
ECE 118
Will not be offered until further notice.
ECE 120
This course may not be used for your 5th depth course. Only ECE majors are able to enroll in ECE 120. Non majors will be able to get cleared Week 10 with space permitting.
ECE 180/188
These courses can be taken multiple times if they are different topics up to 4 times. Certain classes may require prerequisites even if WebReg does not state it. If you enroll in more than one ECE 180 or 188 in the same quarter then you will need to submit an EASy request to add the second ECE 180 or ECE 188.  
ECE 191
In order to be cleared to enroll, students need: all prerequisites of ECE 100 – 109 and 1 depth course with senior standing AND is a graduating senior.

Students without all the prerequisites courses will need to get faculty approval and will be cleared week 10 with space permitting.

Students with all the prerequisites courses but will not be a graduating senior will need to get clearance week 10 with space permitting.

ECE 196
ECE 196 counts towards one elective only.
ECE 197
Effective Fall 2016, CE majors may not use ECE 197 towards their technical elective. This will be strictly enforced. EE, EP, EE& Society majors can use ECE 197 towards Professional Electives only.

Graduate Students

EASy requests for undergraduate level courses submitted by ECE Graduate students will be processed and submitted to the instructor starting week 10 of the quarter.

Prerequisites

Effective Spring 2016, Undergraduate students who do not have prerequisites in non-core ECE courses and want to enroll in a specific course, will need faculty approval through the online course pre-authorization system. 

Students will be cleared Week 10 to allow students who have completed prerequisites to enroll first.

Please NOTE: Getting faculty approval and being cleared to enroll in the course will not guarantee you a spot. If a class is full, please place yourself on the waitlist

Wait List Policy

If a course that you want to enroll in is full, please place yourself on the waitlist. Please note that you cannot waitlist a course during your 1st Pass. Waitlisting is available during the 2nd Pass only. The buttons to ENROLL or WAITLIST will be blacked out. This is normal.

We understand that you need these courses to graduate so please be patient as we work on enlarging enrollment. The Department will do everything we can to accommodate students so please be patient. Waitlist yourself into the class and if seats become available, students will be enrolled in the order they waitlisted. We cannot guarantee that you will get into the course. If you need assistance with an alternate course, stop by during walk in advising hours in Jacobs Hall 2701 or 2702.
