Utah’s ‘Dirty Soda’ Craze Will Hit Dallas With the Arrival of Swig

The soda shop responsible for creations like Dirty Dr. Pepper (Dr. Pepper swirled with coconut) is about to land in Dallas. Utah-based drive-thru Swig will open its 39th location — and the first outpost in Texas — in Fairview next month.

Swig will be located at 371 Southwind Lane in the Fairview Town Center, with a May 6 planned opening. The chain, which began in St. George, Utah, is famous for its “dirty soda,” also known as 44-ounce cups of Mountain Dew and Diet Coke mixed up with everything from half and half to syrups like strawberry puree and English toffee. Customers can choose between menu options like “Poppin’ Pineapple” or “Beach Bum” or design their own sodas.

Beyond sodas, Swig offers energy drinks and boba teas as well as snacks like sugar cookies and salted pretzel bites.

A New York Times article last year traced the popularity of soda shops in Utah to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ prohibition on tea and coffee. But Swig founder Nicole Tanner told the paper that her brand has mass appeal as more Swig shops open across the country. “Some people say, ‘Oh well, it’s just a Utah trend,’ and we kind of proved that wrong when we went to Oklahoma, and proved people like their soda everywhere,” she told NYT.
