Where to Get Thai Food in San Antonio

Even though it’s the second-largest city in Texas, San Antonio has a family-oriented, small-town feel and is one of the more charming downtown districts you’ll find.

Whether you want to stroll along the river walk, catch a Spurs game, or bring the kids to the impressive San Antonio Zoo, there’s an endless list of attractions for all age groups and interests.

As one of Texas’s largest cities, San Antonio has a burgeoning restaurant scene with plenty of options for wonderful dining experiences and a diverse array of world cuisines.

During my most recent trip to San Antonio, I was in the mood for Thai food and spent my days eating my way through San Antonio’s excellent Thai restaurant scene.

The family-owned restaurant draws from generations-old family recipes plated elegantly and served in a cozy dining room.

The helpful and welcoming staff ensure that you feel at home, as you should when enjoying a home-cooked meal.

I started with a delicious bowl of Tom Yum, a Thai noodle soup with hot and sour broth, egg noodles, ground chicken, shrimp, bean sprouts, cilantro, and green onion.

I chose the Chef’s signature Pad Ka Pao, crispy boneless duck sauteed with red and green peppers, and a garlic sauce with fresh basil.

Named for the owner and Executive Chef Almonrat “Mon” Shirley, Mon Thai Bistro and Sushi Bar is a Terrel Hills favorite for authentic Thai and Japanese food in a charming atmosphere.

Its ample dining room has terra cotta floors and elegant stone statues and frescos from Chef Mon’s native Thailand, while the outdoor patio is shaded by beautiful pecan trees wrapped in lights.

You can start your culinary tour in Japan with a few small plates of fresh sushi and sashimi, then head over to Thailand for an authentic plate of Pad Thai or curry.

I loved their Pilates Roll, a hand roll with tuna, avocado, cucumber, masago, and lettuce to start, followed by a super spicy Pad Prik King vegetable and sea scallops stir fry in chili paste sauce.

Located in Regency Park in a bright and intimate dining space with orchids on the tables and colorful tile designs lining the wall and kitchen counter, Thai Vegan is a delightful eatery for families and friends to share a meal.

Each dish comes with your choice of tofu, soy chicken, or soy fish. I loved the tofu satay with skewered marinated tofu and a sweet and spicy peanut sauce.

My favorite main dish is the Pad Woon Zen, a stir-fry with mung bean noodles, cabbage, broccoli, mushroom, carrot, celery, and onion.

Kin Thai and Sushi specialize in authentic Thai food and creative sushi incorporating Texas flavors into Japanese cooking traditions.

The presentation of the dishes at Kin Thai and Sushi is exquisite and undoubtedly photo-worthy.

I enjoyed the Lao-style papaya salad and tempura shrimp with onion rings and sweet chili sauce for appetizers.

If you’re looking for true Japanese fusion, try the Tex Mex Roll with spicy tuna, cilantro, avocado, and jalapeno topped with tuna, salmon, white tuna, fish eggs, green onion, and spicy sauce.

Its vast menu features the most authentic Thai dishes served in heaping Texas-sized portions.

I love their selection of Thai coffee and tea, along with Thai dessert favorites like fried sweet bananas and mango sticky rice.

My favorite dish at Sawasdee is the mussels in a clay pot with a spicy sauce and a side of savory sticky rice.

Baan Thai is a no-frills, casual Thai eatery that uses fresh, high-quality ingredients in its authentic stir-fries, curries, noodles, and salads.

Located in the Oakland Estates neighborhood, they’re an especially popular spot for lunch, with a vast menu of large dishes at a fixed price that doesn’t exceed $13.

They have some of my favorite Panang Curry with coconut milk, bell peppers, green beans, basil, kaffir lime leaves, ground peanuts, and Panang curry sauce with your choice of barbecue pork, chicken, beef, shrimp, or tofu.

Lemongrass Thai Restaurant

Located in an Oak Haven Heights strip mall, Lemongrass Thai Restaurant may look like any old Thai-takeout spot, but their incredible selection of obscure Thai dishes served in stunning displays of culinary art make them one of San Antonio’s hidden gems. The friendly service is the icing on the cake at this unique Thai eatery.

The chefs at Lemongrass go the extra mile, fashioning shapes out of vegetables and donning colorful stir-fries with edible flower garnishes.

They’re also one of the few Thai restaurants that give you a choice between white, brown, and fried rice with your curries and stir-fries.

I recommend the Siam Medley, with crispy roasted duck, grilled jumbo shrimp, and grilled jumbo sea scallops in a red curry cream sauce with asparagus, avocado, pineapple, and cashews.

Thai Chili

Thai Chili is San Antonio’s most beloved and longstanding Thai restaurant, serving the Thousand Oaks neighborhood for 21 years.

Thai Chili consistently receives San Antonio Express-News Reader’s Choice annual award for excellence and is the only restaurant in San Antonio with the coveted Thai SELECT seal of authenticity from the government of Thailand.

I recommend starting with the Tod Mun Pla, deep-fried Thai fish cakes with red curry, long bean, kaffir lime leaf, and lemongrass, served with cucumber salad, jalapenos, and crushed peanuts.

The Pad Thai at Thai Chili is perfection, served traditional style with fried egg, bean sprouts, and green onion and topped with crushed peanuts and lime for garnish. I ordered mine with chicken, but you can add tofu, pork, beef, or seafood.

Located in Terrel Heights, a few blocks from the McNay Art Museum, Tong’s Thai Restaurant is a Thai and Chinese fusion concept and San Antonio’s pioneer bubble teahouse.

Tong’s Thai Restaurant has a romantic atmosphere with a tiki-hut exterior lined with giant palm trees that opens into a serene, lush, and tropical Asian-inspired garden and wooden deck with stone Buddha statues and a coy pond.

Tong’s specializes in Northern Thai dishes from Chiang Mai, along with classic Chinese dishes from various regions.

I loved their Ban Xeo, a Thai crepe made from rice batter that is pan-fried and folded over with a shrimp, chicken and bean sprout filling, and a sweet garlic dipping sauce. They also make delicious smoked brisket fried rice.

With locations in Olmos Park Terrace, Rainbow Hills, Thunderbird Hills, and Balcones Heights, Yaya’s is a favorite neighborhood haunt for family-style meals served in hearty portions.

It was hard to pick just one dish I loved at YaYa’s because everything was fresh and flavorful.

I loved the Thai Chicken Peanut, grilled chicken breast layered over vermicelli noodles and mixed vegetables and topped with Thai peanut sauce, ground peanuts, and scallions.

My favorite curry was the Wild Curry, with Thai pumpkin, mushrooms, zucchini, bell peppers, bamboo, green beans, peas, carrots, and Thai basil in a Wild curry sauce.
