This Post: Are Welch’s Fruit Snack’s Vegan? (2022) – Hassle Free Vegan
All ingredients and nutritional information can be found on the Welch’s Fruit Snacks website.
Non-Vegan Ingredients
There are two main non-vegan ingredients in gummy snacks and candies: gelatin and confectioner’s glaze. But what are these ingredients and what makes them off limits to vegan?
Gelatin
Unfortunately, gelatin is a common ingredient in gummy products. According to Peta.org, “Gelatin is a protein obtained by boiling skin, tendons, ligaments, and/or bones with water. It is usually obtained from cows or pigs. Gelatin is used in shampoos, face masks, and other cosmetics; as a thickener for fruit gelatins and puddings (such as Jell-O); in candies, marshmallows, cakes, ice cream, and yogurts; on photographic film; and in vitamins as a coating and as capsules, and it is sometimes used to assist in “clearing” wines. Gelatin is not vegan.”
Confectioner’s Glaze
According to tasteforlife.com, “Confectioner’s glaze, also known as pharmaceutical glaze, is used by numerous candy companies to add a shiny, smooth finish on their products. It’s made using shellac, but shellac is made of bug secretions” from the lac bug. It’s a lot more appetizing for a company to list confectioner’s glaze instead of lac bug secretions. At least they did list “lac resin” next to “confectioner’s glaze” in the ingredients list. Want to learn more about confectioner’s glaze? Click HERE to read more about it.

FAQ
Is sugar vegan?
Some vegans worry about white sugar because of the use of bone char. According to Peta.org, “Bone char—often referred to as natural carbon—is widely used by the sugar industry as a decolorizing filter, which allows the sugar cane to achieve its desirable white color.” So cane sugar doesn’t technically contain any animal products. But, the desire for sugar to have a pure white color makes some companies use animals bones in the production of it. It’s up to you whether or not you consume regular sugar.
Where does the gelatin come from in Welch’s Fruit Snacks?
According to their website, they use both pork and beef gelatin.
Are Welch’s Fruit Snacks Healthy?
While fruit is often their first ingredient, they are filled with sugar and corn syrup and are basically candy. I would not consider them to be healthy.
Are Welch’s Fruit Snacks gluten-free?
Yes, the regular fruit snacks are gluten-free.
Are Mott’s Fruit Snacks vegan?
Surprisingly, Mott’s Fruit Snacks are vegan but make sure to always check the ingredients list. They do not contain gelatin or confectioner’s glaze.
Summary
Only the Welch’s Fruit Rolls are vegan. Their regular and juicy fruit snacks contain gelatin which is made from animal bones and other ingredients. The good news is that there are a lot of vegan alternatives out there that will give you the same fruity taste in a gummy snack without the animal products.
