Are you a Nigerian searching for the best Nigerian restaurants in Atlanta? Or maybe you are just in the mood for some African delicacies?

List of the Best African restaurants in Atlanta

Some years back, I went to Caribana (The Canadian Caribbean festival), with my friends, it was a good time! You should definitely put it on your bucket list to attend once. It’s a big festival that happens once a year, in August. This is also the best time to visit Toronto, Canada. Anyways, after all the festivities, it was time for some good food. Not surprising, the consensus was to find an African restaurant.

Another time, I went to Orlando, Fl, I made sure I searched for an African restaurant, particularly Nigerian. I found quite a few. There have been many instances like that. Funny thing is, I am not alone in this habit. All my friends have it. It’s something about African food!!!!

The attraction of African restaurants

Whether you’re on a day trip, weekend trip or week long trip, if you’re African, you’re in search of that familiar taste. The most likely taste you’re craving is jollof rice. Jollof rice is a tomato-based rice mixture originated from Senegal, West Africa but now widely popular all over West Africa. Nigeria makes the best by the way (shhhhh…don’t tell the Ghanaians, they beg to differ).

So, if you’re ever in Atlanta craving African food, don’t worry, I have a list of places for you to visit. I am mostly familiar with West African restaurant, I apologize to my other brothers and sisters from other African nations. I will try to expand my taste bud and visit other restaurants.

The African restaurants in Atlanta to satisfy your taste buds:

1. Ike’s cafe and grill: Norcross, GA

Number one on the best African restaurants in Atlanta? Maybe? But it is certainly the most popular. This restaurant tops the list for out of town visitors. It is arguably the most popular West African restaurant in Atlanta and everyone wants to go there as part of their places to go in Atlanta. They have all sorts of food so you are not limited in choice.

The atmosphere is also decent and clean with music playing in the background. The staffs are friendly. The food can take a while to prepare so be patient, it is worth it. Wait time varies depending on the day and time you visit. If you’re looking for an African celebrity sighting, you may get lucky here.

2. The African Grill: Stone Mountain, GA

You are more of an intimate setting type? This place is more like it. The location is a bit hidden since it is in a shopping complex, but the food is delicious. The owner is very welcoming, she goes around greeting and welcoming guests. You feel like a long time friend of the owner or that you’ve visited the restaurant many times. Due to its smaller location, it’s usually packed, but you don’t have to wait a long time for a table to sit. The service is fast and friendly. This is my go-to place for take-out.

3. Buka 2 restaurant: Riverdale, GA

This place is another celebrity sighting location. As soon as you walk in, you notice pictures of different celebrities, mostly from Nigerian on their wall. I think this place is more authentically Yoruba food because the food is SPICY!!!! If you need the spice kick, please go here. Their stew will have you screaming for your mama, so get ready. I am not a fan of spicy food, therefore, I don’t go here too often. The location is also small, but I know they host Nigerian movie premiers and have events.

4. Honest Star Tropical Food: Lawrenceville, GA

I discovered this restaurant through a friend’s post on facebook so I decided to check it out. I have been there twice for take-out and I enjoyed their food. The food is inexpensive. They have great moin-moin if you’re ever in the mood for some. The last time I bough moin-moin there, I’m ashamed to say I finished it in the car before I even got home.

Once you’re done eating at one of these fantastic restaurants, go and walk it off at the centennial olympic park or any other nearby parks. Most African foods are heavy, you want to take a nap after eating them.
