What is COBRA
COBRA (Consolidated Omnibus Reconciliation Act of 1986) is the federal law that allows people to keep health insurance after leaving a job. If you or a family member recently left a job with group health insurance, you may be able to continue this coverage by paying the full cost of the insurance.
Who is Eligible?
- Individuals and families who will lose health insurance from a job. Some reasons you may lose health insurance at your job include:
- Termination (leaving a job by choice or being laid off)
- Death of a covered employee
- Reduction in employee work hours
- Divorce
Financial Help
If you choose to get COBRA coverage, you must pay the full premium amount. You may have other options.

You may be able to find lower cost health insurance on the NY State of Health. Financial help and low-cost options are available. You must apply within 60 days of losing your job-based health insurance.

How to Apply
Your employer or benefits administrator must tell you of your right to continue health insurance coverage. The employer or benefits administrator will give you the paperwork to apply. Normally, you have to choose COBRA coverage within 60 days of getting notice of your eligibility.
