How to terminate an employee is one of the most-asked questions received annually by the MDA human resources staff. Many factors contribute to the stress of terminating an employee and because the process can be so overwhelming, many employers put off the termination hoping the problem will just get better. In reality, when problems go unaddressed, they generally get worse leading to declining morale and decreased productivity that spreads throughout the office. In this training you will understand the best practices for progressive discipline and termination. This training will also cover the importance of documentation and how to avoid mistakes while terminating an employee.

Learning Objectives:

  • What does “at will” really means?
  • Documentation.
  • Progressive Discipline.
  • What documentation you’ll need if you’re taken to court.
  • Who is in the room and how to structure that meeting.
  • What should you say and not say when terminating an employee?
  • What is a protected class?
  • What do you say to the staff and patients after the employee has been terminated?

Dentists and dental hygienists play an integral role in identifying potential patients with a sleep breathing disorder. Together, dentists and dental hygienists are well-positioned to also identify patients at a greater risk for an SBD.

In fact, after a 2015 resolution called for action, the House of Delegates approved an American Dental Association policy statement that addressed dentistry’s role in sleep-related breathing disorders. The statement outlines the role of dentists in treating these disorders, including assessing a patient’s risk, referring patients to appropriate physicians, evaluating the appropriateness of oral appliance therapy, and more.

However, the lack of understanding of what some of the intraoral and extraoral signs are prevented us from clearly identifying these patients. Getting patients educated, diagnosed, and, if necessary, managed with continuous positive airway pressure or oral appliance therapy can help in preventing other comorbidities that are associated with SBD.

Learning objectives:

  • Screening for obstructive sleep apnea in your dental practice.
  • Understanding dental sleep examination and appointment workflows.
  • Identifying and understanding oral appliance mechanics.

If a patient is experiencing pain on one side of the face, it may be caused by a temporomandibular disorder. This is especially true if it involves the patient’s chewing muscles. TMDs are part of a group of disabling conditions that are characterized by dysfunctions in the jaw muscles and/or the temporomandibular joint. To add to that, chronic orofacial pain is also a typical feature of TMD. Muscles of the face can also cause unexplained toothaches that lead to unnecessary dental treatment.

This is where dentistry comes into play. These conditions are often misdiagnosed or overlooked, but as a dentist you can step in and provide the guidance, diagnosis, and resources your patients need to live pain-free or with minimal discomfort. As a dentist, you can successfully treat patients’ pain, but it is important to properly understand TMDs, what to look for, and how to provide treatment, such as with oral appliance therapy.

Learning objectives:</p

  • Taking a pain history and what it means.
  • Understanding how to diagnose common TMJ disorders.
  • Identifying and understanding common orofacial pain symptoms.

This course counts toward the Michigan Board of Dentistry’s pain management requirement.

Participants of this webinar will learn that the flow of money through a dental practice involves much more than handling a spreadsheet or depositing money in the bank at the end of the day. Someone involved with finances must coordinate (sometimes even help develop) the financial policies of the practice. He or she must be able to instruct the whole team — including the dentist — in the importance of their role in the financial health of the practice. He or she must have an understanding of the dental treatment for each patient, the role of insurance in their treatment, the priority of the care, and the time necessary to complete the treatment. Finally the financial coordinator must be aware of the ongoing financial connection of patients to the office. This course will give that person the tools to be successful in a dental practice.

At the end of this webinar, the financial coordinator should be able to:

  • Lead a discussion on importance of a comprehensive written financial policy for the practice.
  • Help the whole office develop and understand the fees of the practice.
  • Recognize the various important steps in communicating finances to the patient and following up on their commitment.
  • Instruct each member of the dental team on their roles in successful financial communication with patients and fellow team members.

About the speaker … Dr. William van Dyk has been speaking to dental audiences since 1985. As part of the ADA Success Seminar team, he brought practice management programs to junior and senior dental students in nearly half the dental schools in the country. Later he helped develop the Advantage Program, which has been offered to new dentists to help transition them into dental practice ownership. Dr. van Dyk has spoken at dozens of dental meetings throughout the United States including the Hinman, Chicago Midwinter, and the ADA Annual Session on topics that include dental esthetics, building patient loyalty, crisis management, and team building. Underlying all of his presentations is the assumption that practice success is based on a close bond with patients. Using information gleaned from other successful businesses, he ties the activities of the office and the various team members to the goal of understanding and satisfying the needs and wants of the patient.

The Michigan law banning human trafficking took effect on Aug. 24, 2006, with various provisions strengthening the law occurring over the following years. In 2014, the Training for Medical Professionals provision was adopted requiring most medical professionals (including dentists) to become trained in identifying the signs of human trafficking. This training session meets the Michigan Board of Dentistry’s new licensing requirement — adopted Jan. 6, 2017 — for health care professionals to complete an identification training course.

Learning objectives include:

  • Understanding the types and venues of human trafficking in the state of Michigan.
  • Identifying victims of human trafficking in health care settings.
  • Recognizing the warning signs of human trafficking in health care settings for adults and minors.
  • Resources for reporting the suspected victims of human trafficking.
