One of the finest films ever produced

Verified purchase

here The Crawdads Sing is a masterpiece of a film that harkens one's soul back to the days when films were intelligently written and remarkably portrayed. If you are looking for a film that will reawaken the forgotten spirit missing in Hollywood for quite some tine, in my humble estimation, this is the film for you to see. the story is unique and will make you feel emotions that keep you involved as the story unfolds. This is a multi-generational tale that will carry you back in time with a story about a young woman who makes a life for herself in a place where she has been unfairly judged and shunned. Daisy Edgar-Jones plays Kya and you will never forget the time you spend watching her story unfold. All the acting in this film is superb. The cast is truly amazing and the production values are way above par. The film is the result of a collaboration of the author of the book and it a work created, directed, costumed, and built by a female company. I think this is the beginning of meaningful films being created finally by people who truly understand a work with such great depth and emotions. You will experience a moviegoing treasure which I hope will be repeated in the future when Hollywood could use an artistic renaissance. I won't reveal the storyline and spoil this great film but I will urge you tenaciously to buy this film and keep it in a treasured keepsake place for future generations to see and pass on to succeeding generations forever/ I love this film and for me it brought back some wonderful moments in nature that I spent with my dad growing up in South Florida. Enjoy a great film made by great artists. You life will be enriched greatly.

I think it was really good but missed in a couple areas…

Verified purchase

Overall it was good. It was very picturesque and scenic. Being such a HUGE fan of the book which I read three times wanting to get caught up in the world that Delia Owens so amazingly crafted, a movie was going to be a very steep up-hill climb for anyone. I think when you read such an amazing book that amerces you into a vidid world, making it match is very difficult because in every reader's mind, you know what the characters look like, how they move and interact with each other. I thought the actress did a very good job. However, she was too put together. This is a girl living in the marsh. No running water, no mirror really and every scene she had clean clothes, perfectly combed hair. It just didn't work. That should have been something that the director as well as the hair, make-up, and costume departments first objective. To make it believable. The book sold over 10 million copies worldwide and sat on the NY Times number one spot for what I believe was 57 weeks. It was their responsibility to have the grit that Owens wrote so eloquently. In that area, the movie fails but for those who unfortunately will never pick up the book, they still should see the movie and learn about "The Marsh Girl".

Pendulous Trees, and Bluish Hues In The Natural Greens

Verified purchase

"Crawdads" is really a great movie. It is not a five star film. "Crawdads" is an example-and an extraordinary one-of what happens when an extremely refined vision of possibilities is curtailed. The expansiveness, in the former fantasy that has washed over us is not as inviting when it negates towards reality, or worse.
In this movie, Kya, a nickname adopted by the young girl Catherine Clark, is abandoned on a huge, lush green tract of marshland in North Carolina. The enveloping struggles, severe, and the dream-like awakening of nascent gifts within tranquility and reflection make "Where The Crawdads Sing" a flooding passage of revelrie. Kya is a vassal for which things thoughtful promulgate around. It's a fantasy because Kya is exceptional; as a truant orphan she is turned towards gentle observations first.
This story is about how Kya(Daisy Edgar Jones) realizes her wonderful gift of natural deduction and her accompanying writing. It is also about drama. Events become complex and Daisy Edgar-Jones is absolute enthrallment when specific incidents call for the viewer to be completely subsumed. With her performance, there is never any questioning the scenes of this play, which is, on one occasion slack on motivation. Tate also, is galvanizing(Taylor John Smith), and his unheeded responsiveness to teach Kya to read is the most sprawling overlay of loving motility; a druidic twirling vineland thick in wonder. As part of this culture, the fantasy continues as Kya, or Catherine Clark, realizes that her natural observations are going to be published.
There's conflict, a serious matter to be settled, as Kya says about the citizens of Barkley Cove, her community: "They hated me". Being an outcast, to Kya the overall population assumes one face. Kya's ability not to incept spiteful distrust or acidity is a motivational treasure. I was completely absorbed in the premise, but I think that, as it is concerned with Kya's life, the fantasy becomes 'notched' in a dimension. Instead of a self-expressing narrative of images, or actions, reality is addressed in a way that is less optimizing.

LOVED the book, LIKED the movie

Verified purchase

Honestly, when I read this book, I was anything but bored and I finished it in 3 days. I told my boyfriend all about it and he even was like WOW that sounds like a great book. We both were excited for the movie, so when it was released we watched it ASAP. Weirdly enough the movie honestly bored the hell out of us. It was good and I enjoyed the actors and the fact that they kept it pretty close to the book, but it was just slow and boring to us. I know that when you read a book before a movie you always have a skewed view, but there are plenty of books that were great as movies, this just wasn't one for me. I'd still recommend to people to watch, because like I said it could just be because I read the book before the movie.

Excellent movie

Verified purchase

Excellent movie. All of the lead actors are believable and contribute to the storyline. It's easy to get into sync with Kya and want the best for her. I watched the movie several times. Each time picking up more from the last time. Kya's life throughout the film is filled with trial and tribulation. Because of her childhood, Kya understands that she was losing Tate for good when he went to college but does not want to accept it. She counts the days down on the calendar when he will return. She does everything she can to prepare for Tate, but he does not show. That was a massive blow to her! Kya picks herself up and goes on.

A serious player next pursues Kya, and she gives into him over time. Kya finds out she's being played for sex, and her 2nd boyfriend is a horrible person in many ways. A huge turning point happens in several scenes. Kya understands she has health and safety issues when she breaks off her relationship with her second boyfriend. Kya knows very deeply that she will never be safe again with her 2nd ex-boyfriend anywhere near her.

The movie has some good twists and turns. You must pay attention to the film to understand the ending and what happened, but not necessarily how it happened.

Feel good film with some tragedy and a bit of a twist murder mystery give this one a try

Verified purchase

Where the Crawdads Sing is a 1960's drama and murder mystery based on a young North Carolina girl's experiences being raised in rural marshlands by a horrid Father. Her family abandons her due to Dad's violence and she raises herself. It's filled with sadness, heartache, and the questions of right and wrong that surround economic hardship, racism/sexism. Don't let that keep you from watching it – it's a fantastic movie. The actors are superb, the story line is good, somewhat predictable yet enjoyable. The cinematography is wonderful focusing on the natural beauty of NC swamplands. If you want a feel good film with some tragedy and a bit of a twist murder mystery give this one a try… it's worth it.

Great Adaptation from the Book

Verified purchase

I read the book and then eagerly waited for the movie. I felt that they did a great job. There are minor differences, which I like. I don’t expect, nor want, books and movies to be the exact same. But they didn’t drastically change it either, which I also like. The “set”, actors, costume, and writers all did a great job, IMO. I only rented the movie, but I now wish I had bought it instead. So, I could watch it again!

Great story, great movie… definitely worth the purchase

Verified purchase

This was well-written and adapted to the big screen. Deeply moving tale from the 50's-60's to current times, about love, tragedy, loss and life. Great acting, scenery and overall a very well done movie. Makes me want to move to the "Marsh" and get a boat and just soak up the beautiful nature around me. It was rated PG-13, but for the smaller kids you may want to cover their little eyes as there are some steamy scenes about 3-4 of them, no real nudity, but steamy enough to raise an eyebrow (wink wink) and there is some language and some violence, nothing too bad…so this one is for the older folks.
