What is a Grease Trap?
A grease trap is a devices that catches and retains greases and solids before they enter the wastewater transport system. This system includes, but is not limited to, sewers, lifts, pumps, and bypass lines that serve any number of businesses. All of these systems are put in place to protect the environment and public health by preventing the release of pollutants.
Grease traps come in all shapes and sizes and many different forms, such as gravity, automatic, and manual. Each type has its own method of operation but the goal is always the same: to intercept FOGs (fats, oils, greases).
The problem with FOGs is that they clog pipes. When fat hardens, it adheres to the inside of sewer pipes and builds up over time. This creates a blockage that can cause sewage to back up into homes and businesses through floor drains and toilets. In addition, it can also lead to overflows at treatment facilities during wet weather events when too much water enters the system at one time. By capturing FOGs before they enter the wastewater transport system, grease traps play an important role in protecting our environment and public health.
