Healthy eating sounds simple in theory, but then life happens. It’s easy to drop the ball when you’re moving at the speed of light. You’ve probably found yourself feeding dollar bills into the vending machine or talking into a clown’s mouth at a fast food joint more times than you care to admit. Snacking is a part of our day, and with a little planning, it can be a healthy part.

What Makes a Good Snack?

When we let ourselves get too hungry, we don’t make good food choices. Junky snacks are easy to come by — cookies, chips and fries taste good, but they leave us feeling ‘bleh’ after an hour or two. That’s why planning snacks in advance is such a game changer! Snacks are meant to keep us going between meals. They’re supposed to balance our blood sugar and keep our energy up.

Healthy snacks aren’t just low in calories. They contain nutrients, like protein, that keep our bodies and minds performing at their best throughout the day. Fortunately, healthy snacks can also be tasty and convenient — when you know what you’re looking for.

Healthy Snack Choices

Some good snacking options include:

  • Applesauce
  • Cottage cheese and fruit
  • Greek yogurt
  • Guacamole and red pepper
  • Hard-boiled egg
  • Jerky (Just make sure it’s low in sodium and sugar)
  • Lunch meat
  • Nutrition bar (Be sure to choose one with no added sugar and a decent amount of fiber)
  • Nuts
  • Peanut butter (or other nut-butter) on an apple, ½ an English muffin or celery
  • Protein smoothie
  • Pumpkin seeds
  • Trail mix
  • Tuna pouch and whole grain crackers
  • Veggie sticks with ranch dressing
  • Veggies and hummus

A lot of these foods can be found in single-serving containers. Even nut-butters and salad dressing come in convenient pouches. Check out some suggestions for healthy prepackaged snacks.

Sometimes, despite our best efforts, we find ourselves in a bind. If you don’t have your healthy snack on hand and a fast food drive-thru is your only option, don’t despair. You can still make healthier choices at the drive-thru.
