HISTORY | Crane’s Tavern

       At the turn of the twentieth century an Irish immigrant named Frank Crane founded Crane’s Tavern in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  Crane’s closed its door during prohibition and reopened in 1933. It was subsequently operated at 333 Queen Lane by Frank Crane’s sons, Francis, Edmund, and Robert.  Francis’s son, Tom, then operated the establishment until 1973.  Francis’s other son, Hank, worked in the German town establishment, but in 1969 he ventured out on his own and opened Crane’s Tavern in Ambler, Pennsylvania.  In 1972 he purchased the Surf City Hotel on Long Beach Island in New Jersey, creating yet another restaurant establishment with the Crane namesake.  Hank’s daughter Beth Anne managed the hotel until it was sold in 1998.  In April of 1999 she and her father opened Crane’s Tavern and Steakhouse on Hilton Head Island in South Carolina continuing the family tradition, now 100 years old, of serving food and drink of great quality with caring and friendly service.     

       At Crane’s Tavern and Steakhouse only the best USDA Prime grade beef is served as well as the freshest seafood & fish.  The wine list is carefully crafted to compliment the menu, and all of the wine is stored in a cellar temperature controlled environment.  Crane’s is notably a recipient of the “Award of Excellence” from the Wine Spectator.
