Anytime you are in an area new to you, the best way to find a great eatery is ask the locals. On a recent visit to the Stuart, Florida area to fish with Capt. Mike Holliday, we did just that. The result was we found ourselves headed to a slice of Old Florida in the town of Port Salerno.

King Neptune may be a bit nondescript, with no frills, but this family-owned and operated seafood restaurant has been serving up great fare in the same location since 1968. The front of their menus says it all, “Live, Love, Eat!” Also be sure to take the time to walk around to the side to see the tarpon mural adorning that wall.

When you eat here, you can expect to find some of the best cracked conch and fritters west of the Bahamas. Or it may be one of their specials like a tuna stack with pineapple, avocado, mango, seaweed and a pineapple drizzle, or ranch panko crusted tripletail topped with a sherry cream sauce. This is not your standard “everything fried” seafood house. You can wash those down with a variety of beers and wines.

As for the friendly atmosphere, we’ll leave that description to a story in their menus from the eatery’s 50th anniversary that was penned by one of their patrons. It is a tale of being new to the community and having a neighbor drop him off at the restaurant for lunch, with a plan to walk home later. The food, atmosphere and friendly owner resulted in the meal lasting all afternoon.

Then the owner would not take no for an answer when she offered to drive him home because it was getting dark. Check out the full story in the menu when you eat there.

Port Salerno is a fitting home for King Neptune. Located just south of Stuart with State Route A1A as its main street, it is a residential and fishing village situated on the Manatee Pocket, a natural harbor just inside St. Lucie Inlet that is noted as a good place to ride out tropical storms.
