Consider La Gloria the little black dress of Lima’s dining scene. A timeless classic since 1994, it has been a training ground for many of Peru’s most exciting young chefs and continues to draw the city’s more traditional businesspeople alongside well-heeled families celebrating an occasion. The historic mansion setting and crisp white tablecloths provide an elegant backdrop for a menu of Mediterranean dishes given a dash of Peruvian flare thanks to local ingredients such as Correlon mountain lamb and cassava. Owner Oscar Velarde knows his wine and there’s an excellent selection of Argentinian, Spanish and Chilean labels; pisco sours are best enjoyed on the shady terrace accompanied by wafts of grilled seafood from the outdoor ovens.
