1. First make an R-shape by crossing your pointer and middle finger and tucking the rest of the fingers into the palm of the hand.
2. Then touch each side of your mouth, brushing down slightly after each touch.
3. R is for restaurant! This sign also looks like you are politely dabbing your mouth with a napkin, as you might in a fancy restaurant. Use these cues to help you remember the sign.

Teaching Tips – to learn how to sign restaurant in ASL

• Get some takeout menus from local restaurants. Ones with pictures are especially nice! Play restaurant at home where you are the customer and your child is the waiter. Order some food and wait politely! Practice signing restaurant together while you play.
• You can create games for children learning money skills right in a restaurant. While waiting for your food, hold on to a menu. Give your child a budget of $10 or $20 and ask him to choose the most number of foods he could get. Practice restaurant by saying something like, “At this restaurant all the foods I would order for $20 are __________” Sign restaurant (and any foods you know!)
