The city of Wichita, Kansas, offers its guests a blend of attractions, including museums, zoos, gardens, parks and live entertainment. Golfers traveling to Wichita for business or pleasure find numerous golf courses available to play. The Wichita Parks and Recreation Department oversees five municipal golf courses. The city asks golfers to wear only soft spikes on any of these courses.

Auburn Hills Golf Course

At Auburn Hills golf course, golfers play on a Perry Dye-designed course with bentgrass greens and zoysia fairways. Because each hole has five sets of tees, golfers of most ability levels can play at Auburn Hills. The course features 62 sand traps and 14 lakes throughout its 18 holes. It measures 7,143 yards and has a slope of 142 with a par of 72. The facility includes a driving range, full-service pro shop and full-service clubhouse.

L.W. Clapp Golf Course

The L.W. Clap Golf Course has a tight layout due to its small size. The course sits in the southeastern area of Wichita and has a creek that winds through eight of its 18 holes. Measuring just 6,087 yards, the course has a par of 70 and a slope of 120. Golfers must have accurate tee shots to make par on this course. It has bentgrass greens and tree-lined Bermuda and rye grass fairways. The facility has concessions and a full-service pro shop with golf instruction available.

MacDonald Golf Course

Locals usually rank the MacDonald Golf Course as the best all-around municipal course in Wichita. It measures just 6,387 yards from the farthest tees and has a slope of 131 and a par of 71. The bentgrass greens were completely renovated in 1995. Mature cottonwood trees line the fairways, which have Bermuda and rye grass. James Dalgleish designed the course original course, and the redesign features the work of Mark Hayes. Practice facilities include a putting green and chipping area.

Arthur B. Sim Golf Course

The Arthur B. Sim Golf Course, sometimes called "Sim Park," sits near downtown Wichita and has a putting green and chipping area in addition to the 18-hole course. The course, which measures 6,330 yards from the farthest tees, has tree-lined Bermuda and rye grass fairways and well-bunkered Bermuda grass greens in a fairly simple layout. It draws the most traffic of all municipal courses in the city. The course rates at par 71 with a slope of 119 and features the architecture of Morris Richard Perkins.

Tex Consolver Golf Course

The Tex Consovler Golf Course in western Wichita is the city’s longest course, measuring at 7,361 yards. Locals consider it one of the city’s most challenging as well, with a rating of par 72, thick trees along the fairways and water coming into play on six holes. The bentgrass greens and Bermuda and blue grass fairways have 54 total sand traps, and the course has a slope of 123. A driving range and full-service pro shop with PGA professional teaching provide for the needs of most golfers.
