If you were even slightly abreast on the goings-on in the games industry in 2012, you would remember exactly where you were the day Journey won Game of the Year and when its soundtrack, composed by Austin Wintory became the first ever videogame soundtrack to win a Grammy Award. It may not seem like much today, but it was something of a moment in videogame history.
Today, on the 10th Anniversary (10 years!!!!!!) developer thatgamecompany, publisher Annapurna Interactive, and iam8bit have come together to celebrate the game in a number of ways. First up is the anniversary accolades trailer that you can see for yourself below:
That’s not all; iam8bit is re-pressing the Journey soundtrack on 180-gram black vinyl. The reissue will also feature updated sleeve art from Mark Englert, making it a must-have for collectors. Pre-orders are up right now on iam8bit.com, and will start shipping in 2023.
Additionally, Journey is also currently 50% off on Steam and the Epic Games Store, and $1.99 on the iOS store, making it the perfect time for players to jump in who have yet to experience this game. If I may engage in a spot of editorialising, playing Journey for the first time was something of a transcendental experience for me. Beneath its mythic impact on the games industry and its place in art history, this is a gentle, intimate, hauntingly beautiful game. If you have yet to experience it for yourself, you absolutely should. It’s a magical game!
