There are a few things I love about dining in Sacramento. There is such a wide range from amazing fried chicken to world-class sushi. We tend to stick to our favorites but have been branching out over the last few months. A lot of these Sacramento restaurants are in the heart of downtown, so even if you’re passing by the region, you can quickly stop in for a bite.

With many neighborhoods, from Old Sacramento to Midtown, these are the best restaurants in Sacramento to check out for your next meal out. It is so important for us to support local restaurants, I hope you will do the same.

How to Support Our Local Sacramento Restaurants

One of the best ways to support restaurants is by ordering direct from the restaurant itself. When using a third-party app, they lose a percentage of the sale. So when possible, I recommend ordering direct and picking up.

A few other ways to support is by purchasing gift cards as gifts, leaving a positive review, and sharing the love on social.

We are so fortunate to have wonderful food in Sacramento, let’s keep them here.

1. Kru Sushi

This was one of my first introductions in the Sacramento restaurant scene and I was so excited that Kru is here. It’s our go-to for sushi in the city, definitely an upscale experience. They have a wonderful happy hour as well when the dining room is open.

So sometimes we will pop in just for that or do take-out as well when we want to be at home. You can order online in the morning and pick it up conveniently at their restaurant. Our favorite rolls to get from Kru are the Spicy Liz and the Tesla Roll.

2. Pangea Bier Garden

I may be biased since Pangea is down the street from our house, but this is our favorite fried chicken sandwich in the city. I’ve gone through almost the entire menu in the last year and every single dish has been amazing. This is where I bring all of my out of town guests for a meal.

We sometimes even grab it to-go. Right now, they have an amazing outdoor patio set up for the year to enjoy for dine-in.

4. Localis

In Midtown, Localis is one of the best upscale dining experiences in the city. Their wine bar sits overlooking the open kitchen which is one of my favorite parts of dining here. The food is really fresh and focused on locally sourced items here in California.

Right now they’re offering a wonderful takeaway testing menu for you to enjoy at home.

5. Canon

One of the few restaurants we haven’t been to is Canon. All of our friends have been and really love their diverse menu, so this is first on our list to dine at. They’re known as a neighborhood tavern in East Sacramento that is refined.

Some of the highlights on the menu include grilled whole chicken and their smoked beef cheeks. They have a very spacious patio to enjoy your meal. Come for dinner throughout the week and brunch on the weekend.

7. Kodaiko Ramen & Bar

Right in Downtown, Kodaiko opened up this last year and serves our favorite ramen. We love a rich broth, and their bowls of ramen do not disappoint.

They focus on sourcing quality ingredients here which is a big part of why their menu is incredible. My favorite ramen on the menu is the Tonkotsu for $15. It has a rich three-day pork broth as the base and topped with arugula, chives, pork belly chashu, and a ajitama egg.

12. Happy Takeout

This is our secret, go-to Chinese takeout joint. I’m embarrassed to admit how many times we have ordered here. It’s just SO GOOD. It’s small and they only do to-go or delivery.

We order pretty much the same thing every time. Chicken chow mein, beef + green beans, the orange chicken (the best!!), and every once in a while, the fried rice.

The portions are huge, so two dishes could be two meals for two people.

13. Binchoyaki Izakaya Dining

This Japanese restaurant serves up classic dishes from Japan and they’re well known for their spicy tuna on crispy rice. We’ve eaten here a few times over this last year and almost always get the spicy tuna on crispy rice personally.

They have other modern Japanese style barbecue dishes as well. Their charcoal grill gives an incredible flavor to their food.
