Looking for an awesome family outing before the summer ends? It’s time to take it to the next level, literally. Embark on the ultimate family adventure at one of New Jersey’s indoor or outdoor obstacle courses. You’ll find these ropes courses near or at beaches, zoos, amusement parks and other spots.

Don’t worry – many courses offer kid-friendly options that are closer to the ground, so even little ones can take part. We’ve rounded up six great courses, located throughout the state, so you can find the perfect spot to get climbing.

Diggerland Ropes Course

Location: 100 Pinedge Drive, West Berlin
Details: One of the world’s tallest ropes courses is located in New Jersey at Diggerland, a construction-themed adventure park. You’ll gasp over the height of this colorful 4-story high course that towers over the parking lot. (This course is definitely not recommended for anyone with a fear of heights.) Climb up ropes, ladders and bridges to reach the top of the enclosed course. All climbers must be at least 48 inches tall or 42 inches when accompanied by an adult. Admission to the ropes course is included with paid admission to the park.

iPlay America Ropes Course

Location: 110 Schanck Road, Freehold
Details: Climb rain or shine at the largest indoor ropes course in the state. Located inside iPlay America, the new Sky Trail High Ropes Course and Sky Tykes Kidz Ropes Course feature fun and exciting obstacles. Test your skills while climbing along rope bridges, zig-zag beams, cargo nets, walk-across beams, vertical rope ladders and more. The kids’ course is for those under 48 inches and the minimum height for the trail course is 48 inches. iPlay America also offers Laser Tag, Go Karts and Bumper Cars, along with other rides and games.

Jenkinson’s Adventure Lookout Ropes Course

Location: 500 Boardwalk, Point Pleasant Beach
Details: Soar above Point Pleasant Beach on this rope obstacle course with two different options. One is a 36-foot-high course for guests over 48 inches. The other, Sky Tykes, is a kiddie course for those under 48 inches, ensuring that no one misses out on the fun. Kids 42 to 48 inches can also enjoy the larger course with an adult who is 18 years old or over. The larger course features 25 thrill elements on two levels, including brightly colored climbers, cargo nets, a pirate’s plank walk, zipline and a peak of 36 feet offering gorgeous ocean views.

Tree to Tree Adventure Park

Location: 707 Route 9 North, Cape May Court House
Details: This aerial adventure course is set high up in the trees. You’ll find ziplines, nets, Tarzan swings, ladders, balance beams, wobbly bridges and other fun obstacles for every age and ability. The color-coded course gets progressively more difficult. The goal is to move from platform to platform while remaining fully secured with a harness. Dress for the weather and be aware that dirt, pollen or tree sap may get on your clothing. While guides are always around the course to help, adults are not permitted to climb the kids’ course. Every participant goes through orientation and training before going up in the trees. Reservations are required.

TreeTop Adventure Course

Location: 560 Northfield Avenue, West Orange
Details: Right next to Turtle Back Zoo you’ll find this new and expanded aerial obstacle course. It offers both junior and adult courses, plus a zipline. The junior course (ages 6 & up) is 10-feet high and has 15 challenge elements like bridges, climbers, swings and ladders, taking 30 to 45 minutes to complete. The adult course is 35-feet high and has 30 elements, taking 1 to 1.5 hours to cover. The 40-foot high zipline was recently redesigned and measures more than a football field in length. Athletic sneakers are required to participate and slip-resistant gloves are suggested. Advance reservations are also recommended.

TreEscape Aerial Adventure Park

Location: 414 County Road 517, Vernon Township
Details: The brand new TreEscape aerial adventure park and ropes course at Mountain Creek just opened this summer. Climb through the treetops to complete an exciting array of challenges. The park features 10 unique ropes courses featuring wooden platforms built high in the trees and connected by rope walks, obstacles, climbing elements and ziplines. The kids’ park, specifically designed for ages four to six, offers 20 different climbing elements. Kids will learn how to use a harness and belay system as you watch from a nearby viewing area. Want to take your adventure to another level? Sign up for a night climb on Friday and Saturday nights.
