Although it’s never been easier to shop online, retailers continue to come up with innovative ideas to entice customers to visit their brick-and-mortar locations. From pop-ups and branded events, to in-store savings and services, there are still plenty of reasons to shop IRL.
Case in point, Crate and Barrel announced the launch of its first full-service restaurant, The Table at Crate, on July 9, 2019. Created in partnership with Cornerstone Restaurant Group, the restaurant is located in Oak Brook, Illinois. It’s adjacent to the home retailer’s storefront and meant to serve as a unique and inspirational experience for Crate and Barrel patrons.
“As a longtime destination for all things home, we know that our customers love to entertain,” Neela Montgomery, then-CEO of Crate and Barrel, explained in a press release. “We share that passion, and The Table at Crate creates a more immersive brand experience for our customers,” she continued.
Helmed by James Beard-nominated chef Bill Kim, the restaurant features a modern, seasonal menu with a focus on plant-based dishes. Many ingredients used in the light fare—think dishes like avocado tartine, shrimp poke, and spicy orecchiette with broccolini and mushrooms—come from local farms. There’s also a large offering of seasonal cocktails, wine, beer, and cider which patrons can sip while exploring the adjoining Crate and Barrel store. Plus, the new spot will offer chef demos, cookbook dinners, and more special events.
“There is a tremendous opportunity to push the boundaries of the restaurant and retail spaces,” according to Josh Zadikoff, the president of Cornerstone Restaurant Group. “We are excited to deliver a new and unique experience for our guests, connecting them with creative food and classic design and celebrating the simple beauty of everyday dining.”
Naturally, since the restaurant was created by a home décor brand, you can expect the interiors to be as chic and on trend as any of Crate and Barrel’s offerings. The indoor and outdoor space showcases the retailer’s latest products and was designed by the pros at Crate and Barrel, including VP of product design and development Sebastian Brauer and the brand’s in-house architecture and brand experience teams.

High-top tables are arranged by expansive floor-to-ceiling windows in this area of the restaurant. Paired with light blue barstool chairs, this space feels connected to the nearby lounge, thanks to a similar color scheme. You can also spot blue pendant lights that offer a charming, whimsical element of design.

In the formal dining area, an array of green, blue, and pink chairs offset the rich camel-colored leather booth, beyond which you can spot the adjacent Crate and Barrel store offerings. It’s a prime example of how the retailer’s décor is seamlessly infused with the restaurant’s design.

Beneath an eclectic bunch of pendant lights sits a large dining table made colorful by the varied hues of the accompanying chairs. The dynamic space makes a case for mismatched dining room chairs (in entirely on-trend colors) and dramatic lighting fixtures.
