Top 10 Cancun Golf Courses. BONUS: Best Golf Resorts in Cancun

Cancun, Mexico’s largest resort region, attracting roughly 3 million tourists annually, became a world class golf destination for both amateurs and professionals due to its unique golf courses. Besides the Cancun golf courses, golfers can get pampered at the best all-inclusive golf resorts, where guests can revel in the beach, boating, fishing, water sports such as parasailing and water skiing, spa, tennis and more.

The local terrain and nature conservation regulations have presented challenges in the construction of new golf courses, however the result of ingenious planning has ultimately created challenging and unique courses which can include cenotes (natural sinkholes), tropical jungle, lagoons, mangroves, sand dunes, ancient Mayan ruins, local flora and fauna and views of the turquoise blut Caribbean Sea.

Mayakoba golf
The Riviera Maya, the area south of Cancun, hosts Mexico’s only PGA Tour, the Mayakoba Golf Classic, which has been held at the El Camaleon Golf Club since 2007.

The best time of the year to go to Cancun for golf courses

  • Best Time for Good Weather: Cancun weather can be fantastic almost all year round, though it is particularly excellent from the end of December through April, with January through March being the absolute peak time for fantastic weather. These months have the least amount of rain and humidity, the balmiest temperatures, and the sunniest skies. The weather in Cancun and other parts of the Mexican Caribbean doesn’t vary much from season to season. The difference between average in the summer and winter is only about 10 degrees Fahrenheit. Winter in the Mexican Caribbean is like the month of May in much of the North American Southeast, with an average temperature hovering around 75 degrees Fahrenheit (24 degrees Celsius). This makes winter the most popular time to visit, as North Americans escape the freezing temperatures of their hometowns.
  • Best Time for Less Money: The best time for great deal is during the summer rainy season, from July through October, with especially discounted prices in September and October. This coincides with hurricane season, but hurricanes have only landed here twice in the past thirty years. The vast majority of days during the wet season are hot, dry, and humid, but with little to no rain.
  • Best Time for Avoiding Crowds: The best time for avoiding crowds is during the rainy season, from June through October, especially in September and October.

Prices for golf courses in Cancun

The prices depend on 3 things:

  • Month of the year when you’ll be in Cancun. Highest prices are in the busy season of mid-December to April. Surcharges are also common around Christmas, New Year’s, and Easter.
  • The place where you’ll take the course. A 5 star resort will have a higher price.
  • The moment when you book the golf course. If you pre-book it a few months before your holiday, you will certain get a good deal.

Top 10 Cancun Golf Courses

1. El Camaleón Mayakoba

El Camaleon Mayakoba Golf Club (Playa del Carmen)

The most famous course is El Camaleón Mayakoba, a Greg Norman design that hosts the PGA Tour’s OHL Classic in November. It’s everything you would expect from a top resort course—immaculate conditions, memorable 18 holes, solicitous service – and the price tag that comes with it.

2. Iberostar Playa Paraiso Golf Club

Iberostar Playa Paraiso Golf Club

Iberostar Playa Paraiso Golf Club might be as enjoyable as El Camaleón. What this fun P.B. Dye course lacks in gulf views it makes up for with huge undulations—in its fairways and its greens—and tons of visual variety. It’s definitely worth buying a yardage book here because the course holds many mysteries for first-timers.

The green fee is $89 for resort guests and $199 for visitors. Note: Don’t mistake this one for the similarly named Iberostar Cancun Golf Club, which is a muny-type course in the busy downtown “hotel zone.”

10. Vidanta Golf Course

Vidanta Golf Course

Located between Cancun and Playa del Carmen, Nicklaus Par Three Experience at Vidanta Riviera Maya (formerly known as El Manglar Golf Club at Vidanta Riviera Maya) is a par 3 Jack Nicklaus masterpiece. The contrast that exists with the colors of this course gives it a natural Caribbean beauty – its bunkers with radiating white sand, the lakes surrounded by natural stones, area part of the game, and the type of green used on this course’s greens blend your target with the outlying weeds, making it a challenge to make par.

The beauty, the nature and the timelessness of this golf course will not only challenge, but inspire you. Lakes accompany you throughout twelve of the course’s holes, the native vegetation of the Mayan Jungle is your natural enemy and spectator and will distract you. This is all part of the challenge to win and determines the time you spend in the game. Also the design of the greens reflects history since it is constructed with styles found half of century ago.

The spectacular 17th hole is characterized by its great degree of difficulty. Besides having two bunkers, one at each end, it also has a bunker in the center of the green which makes it unique to its kind. Additionally, the green is in the middle of the lake which makes it very difficult to make the covered par.

Tips for golfing in Cancun

  • BEST SCENERY: No. 15 at El Camaleón is 155 yards and runs alongside the Caribbean, offering stunning views of the beach and Cozumel. The 16th at Playa Mujeres, a short par 4 that plays into the wind, nearly touches the surf at its green.
  • BEST CHALLENGE: The aptly named Hard Rock Golf Club will wear you out. It features narrow fairways, sharp doglegs and small greens. Oh, yeah, and there are six lakes. Note: Until recently this was known as Playacar Golf Club.
  • BEST COURSE (BEGINNERS): Grand Coral Riviera Maya Golf Club has only one forced carry from the forward tees, so it’s easy to keep it in play. The rest of the tees aren’t so forgiving. Designed by Nick Price, it’s home to a stop on the Mexico Golf Tour.
  • BEST CENOTE: The sixth hole at Riviera Maya is a narrow par 4 guarded by a yawning 27-foot crater that’s about twice the size of the green. It’s a popular spot for mosquitos, so don’t linger.
  • BEST EMERGENCY 18: Vidanta is a Jack Nicklaus-designed par-3 course. Formerly known as El Manglar, it’ll take you three hours at most. Eight holes feature some form of water hazard, and No. 18 is an island green.
  • BEST ALL-INCLUSIVE GOLF: Stay at Moon Palace Cancun, home to three Jack Nicklaus nines, and you get a resort credit of $1,500 or more. You can spend it on golf, the spa, off-site tours, etc. Forego the credit, and you get unlimited golf for cart fees only ($38 for your first round, $19 for others).
  • BEST FOR GETAWAYS: El Tinto, Riviera Cancun Golf & Resorts and Puerto Cancun Golf Club are high-quality courses within a short drive of the airport, making them ideal for a pre-flight round.
  • BEST WARNING: Stapled to the scorecard at Cozumel Country Club: “WARNING. There are CROCODILES found in ALL water features… CROCODILES can launch themselves twice their body length out of the water.”
