“See Forever”
Let me begin by saying that the food was amazing… every morsel eaten was delectable. However, it did not earn the 5 stars because there were some drawbacks.

Cons: 1. You can hear EVERYTHING that is going on in the observatory… especially the annoying “show” City Pulse. When you are paying $32 to get up to the restaurant (I had been up to the observatory prior to its opening during the preview) and a prix fixe of $75 (before drinks) the last thing you want is to be a part of the noise that is going on below you… including crying and whining children! Something MUST be done, as the City Pulse “wheel” seems to be directly under the restaurant- or so it seemed from the noise. It’s as if you are at a carnival when you are trying to enjoy the food and conversation. Ugh. 2. No city tap water? Really? Saratoga big blue bottles that kept on being poured (I didn’t see the bill, so I have no idea how much it cost to drink water that should be available to those of us who had to drive home from the evening. Perhaps it was gratis- I am not sure, but I have never been to a restaurant in the world that you can’t request tap water- and I do travel and enjoy fine dining). 3. Vegetarian option- poor choice- one selection- For someone who doesn’t eat fish, meat or fowl, the selection offered should be on par with the food offered to everyone else (steak, chops, etc). Vegetables over spinach doesn’t appeal to me when it costs so much, 4. The menu is not available online- although my friend who booked the reservation said he saw a menu and it had all sorts of entrees and salads that could be ordered a la carte- the waiter said the only food offered is prix fixe. 5. You MUST pay the entrance fee of $32 per person- Having been fortunate to have dined at Windows on the World many times, it seems crazy that you need to pay an additional $32 to dine. Maybe figure out a way to give a partial credit so that people who just want to dine don’t have to pay $107 without even having a drink? 6. Gluten free? Yikes! My friend can not eat anything with gluten and wanted the steak tartare appetizer that came with toast points- however, there wasn’t a gluten free option for him to have. (limited storage and the difficulty of bringing food up was offered as a reason for the limited selection)

Pros: 1. Food was amazing- no question about it. The prixe fixe included a starter, a main entree and dessert. After going back and forth with our waiter about my vegetarian choices, I asked if I could have 2 starters as my meal plus a corn cake that was offered as part of one of the dinner selection. After going to inquire, he said that would be fine. Phew… I felt relieved as the starters sounded great- and a lot better than veggies over spinach or risotto. a. Spinach salad with fresh strawberries was very good. b. My 2 choices for my main meal were tasty and beautifully plated. The corn cake turned out to be pollenta, which was rich, creamy and everyone at the table (7 plus me) agreed it was the hit of the evening. c. Chocolate hazelnut torte was a creamy almost mousse like dessert with a dark chocolate covering.. it was served with chocolate gelato (?) or was it ice cream (?) which looked a bit like, well, see the picture and see what I mean. Regardless, it was eaten and loved. d. Everyone at the table had something for dinner that they each loved. The steak and chops were delicious they said- the cheesecake was a tiny portion and was just ok. The sorbet and gelato were good they said- but I think the winner dessert was the torte that I had. e. Our waiter (Josh) began the evening with a bit of an attitude about our dietary concerns and questions, but he turned out to be great once he began serving the meal and seeing how happy everyone was. f. The view is amazing- we were there as the sun was setting and it was breathtaking. On a clear day- you can almost see forever!

I do need to say that we had a 5 pm reservation- so perhaps if one dines later in the evening, the crying children might not be something to worry about- although I imagine that the “show” goes on all night. I would return if I had out of town guests who wanted to see the observatory- but would only return to dine if they “do” something about the admission fee being additional to dining. I also noted on the website that they won’t take a reservation for more than 8 persons so I am not sure if it is good for larger groups.”
