Top Spots: 7 of the best golf courses in the Columbus area

Father’s Day is just around the corner, and if your family is anything like mine, a gift certificate for a round of golf is a no-brainer.

Central Ohio is home to many beautiful courses, ranging from exclusive, private clubs to public courses to suit any player’s skill level. I asked NBC4 viewers what their favorite courses were in the Columbus area and here’s what they said:

Foxfire Golf Club

Where: 10799 State Road 104, Lockbourne

Boasting 36 holes, the Foxfire Golf Club offers two courses for golfers: The Foxfire Course and the Players Club Course. The Players Club Course offers a bit more of a challenge, combining American and traditional British designs. NBC4 viewers say both courses are among the best here in central Ohio, and it’s nice to have the option to take it a little easier on the Foxfire Course or to step their game up on the Players Club Course. Foxfire Golf Club offers lessons in both private and group settings. The course’s summer rates range between $13 and $32 for the Foxfire Course and $23 to $45 for the Players Club Course.

 Bent Tree Golf Club

Bent Tree Golf Club is known as one of the best championship courses in the area. The beautiful course is stretched over 167 acres and features bent grass tees, fairways and greens, along with many bunkers and water hazards. Their rates range for $20 to $51, depending on the day and your tee time.

For more than 100 years, the Scioto Country Club Golf Course has been one of the top courses in the country. In fact, it was the first 18-hole course in central Ohio. Jack Nicklaus trained on the course under the guidance of Jack Grout. The club has hosted five major championships over the years, but is still enjoyable for players of all skill levels. The club features generous tee grounds, shot-game areas, and an indoor facility and teaching center for all-year practice, club fitting and lessons.

This par-72 semi-private golf club opened in 2007 and has hosted the 2013 U.S. Amateur Qualifier and the 2015 and 2015 Ohio Public Golf Championships. The course features numerous, ponds, creeks and extensive wetlands as well as six sets of trees. The Columbus Country Club golf course was built in 1907. Over time, nature and a handful of designers have made adjustments to the course. With the new redesign, the course is returning to Donald Ross’ vision from 1914, offering players wider fairways, more bunkers and a more enjoyable game. The club features the 18-hole Championship Course and the Par 3 Course for juniors and beginners to get comfortable with the game.

Double Eagle Golf Club

Double Eagle has been named one of the top 100 golf clubs in the country and has been featured in Links Magazine and Golf Digest. The course meanders across 350 acres of rolling terrain featuring grassy meadows, forests, fast greens, numerous water hazards and bunkers,  and multiple wide-open fairways. The club is a private, invitation only club, but once you play there, you’ll want to keep coming back.
