The Green Mountain State of Vermont lies in the north east of the United States and it’s the only New England state to not have an Atlantic Ocean coastline. Located far enough north to share a border with Quebec in Canada, Vermont occupies an area of less than 10,000 square miles, with a population of around 600,000 people. Originally inhabited by the Abenaki and Iroquois native American tribes, the state was populated by French and British settlers prior to its admission to the Union in 1791.
Seven clubs founded the Vermont Golf Association in 1902 and nowadays it represents almost 11,000 golfers in 63 clubs dotted around the state. The Vermont State Women’s Golf Association provides a similar service for female golfers in 50 clubs.
One course constructed in the late 1990s has risen to near the top of the Vermont rankings and it’s the Graham Cooke-designed Country Club of Vermont near Waterbury Center. Great though that modern layout is, most still think the old Walter Travis track at Ekwanok and the Wayne Stiles and John Van Kleek classic at Rutland still exemplify the very best in Vermont golf course design.
