Tucked away in the mountains of Garrett County in western Maryland, The Casselman is a historic inn, motel and restaurant that has been around since 1842. To this day, we continue our long, treasured history of serving travelers, and the local community of Grantsville, Maryland. The Casselman offers our guests a nostalgic, comfortable stay at our historic inn or in one of our affordable motel rooms. We invite our guests to enjoy a delicious country meal served in the relaxed atmosphere of our famous restaurant’s dining room.

Built in 1842, The Casselman was one of the numerous inns along the National Trail to serve the stagecoaches, covered wagons, drivers and riders that made the Old Pike the busiest thoroughfare crossing the mountains. In our 180 years of history, we have been called Drover’s Inn, Farmer’s Hotel, Dorsey’s Hotel and most notably, The Casselman.

Daniel Grant, an English engineer from whom the town of Grantsville took its name, was the original owner of a tract of land that he called Cornucopia. It included much of Grantsville and one thousand acres around the town. A later owner, Solomon Sterner, built The Casselman with brick that was handmade and burnt on the land.  Much of the woodwork was fashioned from hand-hewn timbers and hand-planed boards. Each room in the original three-story federal brick house contained a fireplace, which was the only source of heat for warmth and cooking. Later in 1903, a kitchen was added by the Dorseys.

In 1964, Ivan and Della Miller acquired The Casselman. The business soon outgrew the facilities, and the Millers added a dining room, antique shop, bakeshop and forty-unit motel. The Casselman continues now as a second-generation family-owned business, and we are proud to be considered an important historic landmark in western Maryland.

If you would like to learn a little more about the history of our hotel, you can read more on our history page, here.

The historic Casselman Inn features the two-room Dorsey Suite with its newly decorated bedroom and sitting room areas. The classic beauty of the antique furnishings and oversized double bed combine with the comfort of a sofa that can open into an additional bed and the luxury of a private bath with soaking tub in each room. In addition to the suite, two other bedrooms with private baths are also available. Take a step back in time by choosing the suite or another room for your overnight stay.  Each night includes a voucher for a free breakfast in our dining room the next (following) morning. The Casselman Inn is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The most recent addition to The Casselman is The Casselman Motel, a 40 room hotel/motel located just behind and to the left of the restaurant. In keeping with the original historic inn and restaurant, some of the furniture was hand-crafted by local community members and the Miller family, which helps create a relaxed home-like feeling. Our comfortable rooms feature a private bath, TV, coffee maker, microwave, desk, seating and more.

Some of our rooms are freshly remodeled and feature quality, solid wood furniture from nearby craftsmen. If you want to reserve one of these rooms, make sure to request a reservation asking for a newly remodeled room. The Casselman Motel is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

We invite you to come and eat in our restaurant’s original dining room with its wooden floor and historic decor or in the “new” dining room, which was added in 1973 and comfortably seats 125 people. The cuisine of our restaurant is simple, country food with a variety of favorite recipes reminiscent of the Pennsylvania Dutch and Amish background of the owners. If you would like to see an entire list of what we offer, check out our Breakfast Menu and our Lunch/Dinner Menu. For current specials and other info, visit us on Facebook. Our restaurant is open Monday through Saturday from 7 am – 8 pm. The restaurant is closed on Sunday.

We also offer homemade loaves of bread, cakes and pies all prepared in our very own bakery downstairs. Visitors are welcome to watch the preparation of our baked goods and smell the aroma as they are removed from the oven.
