Video: The Journal News/lohud guide Westchester golf courses

The Journal News/lohud.com has published a guide to all six of Westchester County’s public golf courses.

The rankings

1. Mohansic – The layout is challenging. The conditions are relatively strong. The setting is tranquil. With a little work, this could be a great public golf course.

MOHANSIC: Course at the head of the class

2. Hudson Hills – It’s the upscale experience preferred by skilled players and those who have departed private clubs. The condition of this course is rarely in question.

HUDSON HILLS: A challenges for Westchester’s best golfers

3. Saxon Woods – Location is a big reason why this ranks as the most popular county golf property, but there are some interesting holes and the course is well maintained.

SAXON WOODS: The best bet in lower Westchester

4. Sprain Lake – The renovation is nearly complete and the course is among the most user friendly in the region. A strong back nine tests golfers with talent.

SPRAIN LAKE: Great for beginners

5. Dunwoodie – Sometimes the ego needs to be stroked. Anyone looking to go low should go here. It’s a short course, perfect for beginners and those looking to have fun.

DUNWOODIE: Ready-made for beginners

6. Maple Moor – Despite some chronic issues, this remains a popular course. And the county is drawing up plans to improve the drainage problems and overall conditioning.

MAPLE MOOR: Westchester’s most narrow course

The process

After playing all six of the courses, we rated them, keeping in mind the layout, the level of difficulty, the cost, the conditions relative to the weather and the overall experience.

WESTCHESTER: Public golf courses no longer in decline

The critics

Josh Thomson – The only golfer on the project who can hit a ball 250 yards with a perfect little draw. He’s got incredible tempo and can finish on the greens. A good day ends somewhere around 80.

Mike Dougherty – The most experienced golfer on the lohud staff with a long list of excuses, from cranky knees on up. He’s rarely in trouble … on the course. A good day ends somewhere around 88.

Vin Mercogliano – The coveted millennial who is only a few years into his golf odyssey. He plays because it’s a social event and will soon purchase a pair of soft spikes. It’s a good day if he breaks 100.
